Postoperative Support

My mother was just diagonosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.  I live in a different state but will be there for the surgery and to provide some postoperative care and support.  I'd love to be able to stay indefinitely, but unfortunately work won't allow that.  I was wondering if anyone had advice on how long I should try to make myself available to be there.  We're not sure yet if it will be a lumpectomy or a masectomy, and I realize that no two situations are the same, but I would appreciate any advice/expierence anyone can provide.
