Mary .. the Canadian dollar was at $1.0468 the last time I checked.  4 1/2 cents is better than nothing!  I'm surprised, as I thought it was higher than that.

It was $1.06 yesterday.  You may not remember but it used to be $.76 about 6 years ago!

If you put the two together---cutting spending and getting rid of loopholes--plus making the tax system fair, yup, it would be under control in no time.  But the senator from Alaska and the congressperson from Iowa (randomly picking states) aren't going to give up the spending that goes to Alaska and Iowa.  They want spending to be cut for California.  And those with the tax breaks, they aren't giving up their breaks either.

On the bright side, I am officially on notice that no matter what happens, I should appear for work on the 3d. . . .may not get a paycheck on the next go round but I can still go to work.  spiffy!

Dinner tonight---unknown.  Monsters are racing.  Trying to avoid buying them a pizza like last week.  Can't seem to get DH to plan the meals in advance so we aren't faced with omgoditstimeforthemonsterstoeatandthereisnodinnerready again.......sigh.....

Congress should be in the first wave of people who aren't paid should the government default.

Just raise the stinking debt ceiling and then fight about everything else!

I have a recipe to share. I believe this is a first in the 3 years I've been on BCO.

Take two graham crackers. Spread on with Nutella and one with peanut butter. Put sliced bananas on between them and press lightly together. Freeze. Like ice cream sandwiches but better for you. You can use all of one spread or the other. My kids love these.

Cindy, once you've become a "cancer patient' you tend to get more prompt service at the doctor, even if they aren't really worried. Some people do have "late ovarian recovery" after chemo -- it can even be up to 3 years later! And tamoxifen can cause a thickening of the uterine lining that is totally benign. Is there something we can get you at the BCO bar to help you forget about it for the weekend?

Cindy I think we all assume the worst when they 'find something'.  In my perspective I've had shoulder, brain, back and lymphoma.. but I just have breast cancer.

    Cindy,

oooo, I hate that call you up and make you wait thing...that said, I'm with revkat on this one.  You are under uber monitoring--that means the front of the line for everything even when its nothing.

Hang in there--go make some of those nutella/banana/peanut butter things (that sounded so very yummy!) and tuesday will be here soon enough.

Vodka & lemonade with plenty of ice sounds pretty good to me. Any lemonade back there? Any old rotgut vodka will do, but Absolut will be absolutely fine if you have it!

Cindy, everyone is right - you go to the head of the line if yiu are a cancer patient. Hang on, eat good stuff and chase it down with a doublw what's-your-pleasure. We'll wait right here with you.

The Aussie dollar was $1.09 against the US dollar yesterday. I remember a year ago, it was 94 cents. Lucky I took my Super (401k) out of shares.

On the cats spending time outside - very common here as in NZ - no predators except for dogs and traffic. Miss Poppy spends all day outside when I'm at work, but is curled up in her bed at the moment - she knows when I'm not going :) We let her stay outside until about 9pm (8 when it's cold) and we keep her inside all night after that. That gives her 'hunting' pleasure while being responsible cat owners. Our last cat, Lucy, wasn't allowed to sleep in the house but DH has warmed to this one and tolerates her presence. I know that sounds mean, but we have a verandah at the front of the house which is where she slept, so she wasn't out in the open at all.

DH is playing golf today, so I might offer to cook him bacon and eggs - not sure if I have any bacon though.

Alyson, thanks for the lemon curd recipe. I think that 200 gms butter works out to roughly 1 cup or 2 sticks of butter for us US ladies. I'm going to have to make this soon. Love lemon!

And Crème Fraîche! Yum. I have an easy recipe to make it yourself.

    Crème Fraîche

1 cup whipping cream mixed with 2 tablespoons buttermilk. Combine well in glass jar and cover. Or in a glass or pottery bowl covered with plastic wrap. Let stand at room temperature for 8 to 24 hours (or overnight)*, or until thickened (about the consistency of sour cream). Stir well and refrigerate. Use within 10 days.
*Ultra-pasteurized cream takes considerably longer to thicken than fresh cream.

    Joan:
"After paying so much out of pocket for the breast cancer treatment at the beginning of the year, I'm getting everything else done possible the rest of the year so I don't have to pay a dime. After all these years of paying into the health insurance program and being enviably healthy, I'm totally getting my money's worth now!"

I was able to cram my chemo, surgeries and radiation into the same calendar year as well. And I don't feel the slightest bit guilty, because I paid and paid into the system while never expecting to get anything out of it, but was too chicken not to have it.

I talked to Hadley today about approaching HR about donating time to her, and she said not to. She was afraid it would rebound on her somehow. The first six months you are here are probationary and they can let you go for any or no reason (and yes, that's legal in Indiana), so she's afraid that any pushing might make her supervisor decide to get rid of her instead of (as she has now), allowing her discretionary medical leave and disability. *sigh*

Enjoyful, I completely agree this is all politics. The right are doing their level best to force the country into default so that the economy is somehow Obama's fault, instead of him inheriting Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy and two very expensive wars. If Obama somehow manages to fix things before the election, they'd look bad, you know. And it's more important for them to get back into control than it is take care of the elderly and disabled and the vets. JMHO, of course.

And I think Congress should be fined daily and get NO pay until they get this debt ceiling thing worked out. And I don't mean for just a few months and thrashing it out again. Hit 'em where they live. And stop allowing them to set their own salaries and benefits and pensions and health care. And mandate a line-item veto to cut the pork. Close tax loopholes for the wealthy and businesses. Make them truly pay roughly a third of their income into the system (state, federal, Social Security) like the rest of us middle-class schlubs have to.

Yup-still doesn't show. Just made a post(above) and it doesn't show in the active topics page.

Is it because we're talking about politics again?

Bren, apparently commodity linked currencies are found in countries that export a lot of "commodities."  Here's a link that starts off with a pretty good description but it's one of those Google book previews for "Day Trading and the Currency Market" and the following page that would sort it all out is not included in the preview. (that is one honkin' huge link I hope it works.

Very interesting piece on commodity linked currencies that kind of gives a basic understanding of what they are.  This is a google cached article so I don't know if the link will work.  If it doesn't work and you want to search for it, it turned up on page 2 of my Google search for commodity linked currency.  It's a nasdaq.com piece, the original is gone but the Google cache is still available:

hmmm, curious....then again if not being posted in active wards off the gnomes, then 3 cheers I say......

editted to add:  the thread is still viable in my favorites--and shows up on the main board-- but its no where on the active thread list.  Which is fine.  anyone with us in favorites will still find the thread.  anyone who is contaminated by gnomes won't unless they hunt us down....

It's still showing up in my favorites, just not in the active topics index. It's in the main index, too. I'm perfectly happy with it not showing up in the active topics. Some people who seem to hate this thread also can't seem to stay away, so if we're not in the active topics, they'd actually have to search for the thread. Can't claim it's constantly in their face so they just HAD to respond. Again, all of the above is JMHO.

Ok, DH fed, I'm fed and I'm being lazy getting ready to go and get the food - sigh. I did read a funny thing on our paper about your debt crisis but hesitate to publish it. If you're interested, I'll C&P it if I can find it in the online verison.

Can't find it online, so you will be spared - it was an imaginary conversation of Obama calling a TV show host who helps people in debt. The Ozzie dollar is now 1.11.

I think the alternativ greatnonprofit people are referring to it so much.. maybe the mods thought it be better that it not show.. up.. thus easier to hide... if so I think that is smart.

I've saved it in my 'favorites'.  I guess black cat already figured this out.

It was showing up this morning, but not now.

Still not in the shower - DH beat me to it. Oh well, at least I don't have to rush home from shopping to make him lunch. I was thinking of going clothes shopping later and see if I can get some drip dry tops to take away on the trip - I'm still worried over what to pack and how I will wash it. 6 weeks is a long time!!!
