The I Heart Boobies fundraising campaign inspires a lot of negative feelings in me, as a long-term survivor and as a mother.

Great commentary!!!  Thank you so much for sharing it here.  I, too, have been disturbed about breast cancer slogans using words like "tatas" and "second base," and your article really hit the nail on the head re. these "cute" sayings sending a totally wrong message.

I applaud you for putting your emotions into such a simple yet eloquent piece that I'm going to pass along to others!    Deanna

Love it!  I agree with you completely.  I think that the campaigns that use these types of slogans do so in order to attract attention - certainly you'll get more 20-somethings participating in a breast cancer fundraiser if the terms "Boobies" and "tatas" are used.  But I also think that those who participate in and contribute to these types of campaigns probably completely miss the most important message, which is that breast cancer is a serious, life threatening disease for which we need to find a cure and which we need to learn how to prevent. 

I have nothing against making fundraisers fun; that's the way to get more participation and more money.  But I do have a problem when the disease itself it not presently seriously, and that's how I see these types of campaigns.

Loved the article! I agree with the whole thing. It's breast cancer and cancer is the ugliest word I now know. Nothing about this experience has been cutesy or pink.
