Hysterectomy?

Options

My Ob doctor just called and said my cancer marker numbers are elevated.  I have a complex cyst on the one ovary that has doulbled its size in a month.  She recommends removing the cyst and one ovary or doing a total hyst.  I am 41 and estrogen + with my breast cancer.  What should I expect if I have a total hyst and cant take hormones?  Anyone else gone through this??

I had a total hysterectomy before my breast cancer due to fibroids. Is your cyst a fibroid? I never took hormone replacement therapy but I am on antidepressant medication that helps me from being angry. I do get hot flashes and night sweats, but I'd get those anyway at some age. I had my surgery at about 45 I think. I am 52 now. My cancer was ER+ and I'd never play around with that as the estrogen fed the cancer. A lot of women don't get that.

I am 60 years old and I tried to get my oc to give me a hysterectomy to get rid of the estrogen. She is leaving it up to me and my gyn he said the oldest one he had given for bc was 59 and she had just started in menopause I am on femera and I do not take chemo.

I am 39 and had a complete hyster / ooph on October 1st. I feel great. The hot flashes are not bad and it seems as though exercise helps reducing them. My surgery was done laproscopically, and my recovery was fairly easy. I am very happy I had it done. Just one less thing to worry about!

     Take care,

I was pre-menopausal at the time of my mastectomy (I was 53) and had a large fibroid on my uterus.  I decided to have a hysterectomy (uterus, ovaries, tubes and cervix) to get rid of the fibroid and to make me post-menopausal so I could begin arimidex.  It was the best thing I ever did!  I'm loving life without a uterus!  Recovery from the hysterectomy was way better than from the mastectomy; for me anyway.  Just rest when you're tired, eat when you're hungry, and try to increase your daily activity a little bit at a time (even though you won't want to).  Get some colace as having a bowel movement will feel like you're in labor - fear not, it will get better. Yes, there are mood swings, hot flashes, vaginal dryness etc., but all those things can be dealt with in consultation with your doc. If I were you, I'd go for the hysterectomy.  My cancer is hormone positive too and I take great pleasure in starving the little bastards of their estrogen supply.

I was 50 and had a total hyst and ooph. I was scheduled for the hyst prior to getting my cancer diagnosis. When my bc came back 97% ER+, I decided to do the oopherectomy as well. I do have some hot flashes but they aren't severe. I do take Femara and have joint pain with that. Don't know if that's due to lower estrogen altogether, or  the femara itself.

The hyst and ooph were done vaginally and I had NO pain following surgery.

You still have to take the femara even  after having hysterctomy?

Hi ladies - just had to jump in as I'm three weeks post op from an abdominal hysterectomy with tubes and ovaries removed also.  I had a huge complex ovarian cyst and what looked like a polyp growing in my uterus.  So my onc and gyn decided best to take everything out.  It was a tough experience, I won't lie; but feeling much better now.  In fact I'm thinking about going back to work early, fatigue is the biggest problem right now.  I'm also ER+ and wonder what life will be like without HRT.  So far so good!  I have warm flashes (as opposed to hot flashes).  Oh, I'm 48 and had periods every 28 days, so instant surgical menopause.  I see the onc on Thursday for an Arimidex rx (was taking Tamoxifen).  My understanding is that the adrenal glands continue to make small amounts of estrogen so we positive girls have to suppress it.  I hope you'll continue to post and let us know your decision and how you do.

    Hugs, Tracye
