Anyone taking Nexium for Acid Reflux?
Wasn't sure where to post this question, but here it is! I have a hiatal hernia dx'd several years ago. Over the last several months, acid reflux has been especially bad and Zantac just isn't cutting it anymore. Since esophageal cancer is a major concern, my doc first ordered a fecal occult blood test (negative) and then prescribed Nexium.
I've been reading about it and have heard some negative stories so I haven't filled the Rx yet. Please let me know if/how it's working for you, if you're taking it.
Thanks, Linda

Linda I took it years ago and it raised my Gamma GTs (part of liver counts). I had a huge fight with my (then) doctor as he said I MUST be drinking! I said I wasn't. Actually contacted the makers of Nexium to find out if this was a side-effect. My doctor actually fired me for lying to him!!!!
What have you heard?
-
I've heard of extreme nausea, vomiting, you-name-it! Liver counts rising doesn't so great either!
-
The worst is that it does work though! You never know what side effects you'll get.

Linda
I have been on the PPI's (proton pump inhibitors, which Nexium is) for at least 8 years. I have had no side effects from them. The only drawback is that after a few years or so, the effectiveness of the particular formula wears off and I have to change to another formulation of PPI. Your mileage may vary. I am currently on the generic equivalent of Prevacid.
Of course, look at the side effects, but since these PPI's have gone from RX only to OTC, they likely have a good record or their manufacturers would be sued into oblivion.
I would start with an OTC PPI, such as omeprazole (generic for Prilosec) since they are so cheap. It's worth discussing with your physician.
-
Thanks for the info! Not sure whether or not the PPIs have been approved by Health Canada for OTC. Will check with my pharmacist.
-
For what it's worth Linda, I'm on Prilosec now without any problems at all.
-
I did once years ago and it worked. I was on Prilosuck but that didn't work for me during this chemo. I am now on Protonix and it is working better.
-
Iago, how did Prilosec let you down? I don't think anything would work during chemo.
-
I have been on Nexium for 9 years at least. The only side effect I have had is the stomach upset. It works great on my reflux but since chemo, I can't miss a dose. Before Chemo I could go every other day with out a problem.

HI Linda,
I am turning up here a bit late. Anyway, I have been on Nexium for several years and I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. I take 40mg which is stronger than the usual 20mg dose and still no problems. It really helps and I notice the reflux when my script runs out and i don't get it remade for a few days.
By the way I used to also be on methotrexate and steroids as well as an NSAID at the same time as Nexium. No liver issues.
I am not trying to dismiss the issues that people have, but for me it really has been one of the most benign, but helpful medications I have taken.
Good luck.
Sandy

barbe sorry I just notice your post. Prilosuc just did nothing for me. Ends up the Protonix wasn't working this time either (4th treatment). I am now on Carafate and Protonix. I had an issue in the past and the Carafate worked well for me… it's good for reflux from liver bile. This is hard to diagnosis because you can have it at the same time as Gerd and has similar symptoms.
