O.K., Ladies, I have a question about nails...

I have had over the course of ten years deteriorating nails with ridges and then more ridges and then very dry cuticles etc. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and am being treated and breast cancer and I am taking Arimidex now for over 3 years. When I was diagnosed with BC, I began to take more supplements and more regularly and when my bones were affected by Arimidex, I began taking my calcium etc and added D when that became the thing to do. This past week I realized that my nails are so strong again. They had begun to split back in the summer. The ridges seem better and my cuticles are almost normal. I checked my pills, vitamins the other day and realized that the multi-vitamin made by Shaklee that I get from my sister had upped their vitamin D. So I was taking more D since September than I thought I was. My diet etc is the same. Nothing has changed. The only change is I am taking maybe 1000 iu of vitamin D more than I was before September and before. Could there be a connection with the improvement of my nails and vitamin D. If that is the case, what else is it doing or was it not doing in the past? I have never tested my D. Maybe I should? Then I have read all the articles on taking less D and more D. Of course it is confusing. Has anyone had this sort of improvement with their nails if they have upped their vitamin D? I guess that is what I am trying to ask. Sorry for all the words.

Interesting post.  My nails have also been considerably better post-bc, and I've been wondering if it possibly has to do with lower estrogen levels. (I had been on HRT prior to my dx, so likely had way too much estrogen.)   But I'm also supplementing with 1,000 units of D3 (even though my natural D levels were higher than most), and I've also switched to a calcium supplement that has much higher ratios of D and magnesium than any I'd previously used.  Maybe the D is facilitating the calcium absorption?     Deanna
