New "Needle" sensation during RADS

Options

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading these boards for a few months now, following most Oct/Nov rads, and this is my first posting.  I appreciate all of you sharing your experiences, it is really helpful to know I'm not alone, or experiencing things no one else has experienced before.

I had my 17th out of 33 rads today and for the very first time, I felt the beam.  It felt like a hot needle sensation entering my breast from both sides.  It was painful.  When I told the tech "that's the first time I ever felt anything like that before" they pretty much just commented yea they hear that a lot, wouldn't confirm if others said early/late in treatment and pretty much just quickly got me out of treatment room as they usually do. (In such a hurry).  When I got out to my car, my breast felt hot.  Again, first time.  Now I am home, 1 1/2 hours later, and my breast feels normal again.

Is this normal?  Does the burning needle sensation get worse as time goes on? Is this the "stabbing" sensation gals talk about coming from out of nowhere? I don't expect my rad doc to give me much better info than the techs.  She brushes off every question/concern with "everyones experiences are different".

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Lisa

I had the same thing.  Mine did not hurt just hated the way it felt.  Its form the nerve ends being fried, in time it will go away.  My last Rad was 9/14 and i still have it at times.

I can happily say that I have not had this experience again, Thank goodness!   I do not know why that one day was so wierd.  I'm guessing that it could possibly be that I was premenstrual/retaining fluid, and/or the radiation machine was not programmed correctly (they assured me that everything was the same).

I'm so relieved to hear that. Am in the middle of chemo and just telling myself chemo is the worst and that it will be over soon. I will be getting RT in a couple of months and felt a little depressed reading your first post. I got expanded yesterday and had an echo done afterwards...the pain was out of this world.

I had a strange "zapping" sensation during my first rads treatment and never again.  I asked my rad onc and he couldn't explain it.

Hi Lisa, I have felt it too. Was wondering if the beam had not just struck one of those markers they leave in the breast and it heated it up?
