Eye dilates.could it be brain mets?
Hi all,
I just came back from my dr.My left eye has been dilating. Not sure why but he is ordering a brain MRI. Has to be pre-approved through insurance first.Hopefully that gets done and I can get it done next week. Has anyone had this happen.? I read online it can indicate brain tumor.I am really concerned.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Dee, I work in an ER and I see all kinds of problems there that have nothing to do with cancer of any kind but which could also be signs of metastatic disease in someone who has had a previous cancer diagnosis. One that can cause unilateral dilation of the eye is call "adies pupil". There's also a condition called "adie's syndrome" which affects other areas of the body in addition to an eye. Adie's pupil is a benign condition, sometimes permanent, with no known cause which usually effects women between the ages of 20 to 40. You can look it up on the net and read about it for yourself.
Whenever those of us who have had breast cancer present ourselves at the doctor with complaints of something that could, even remotely, be cancer related they tend by protocol to go straight to the big guns. I've had lower right back pain for 2 weeks straight and intermittent numbness in my right toes for probably close to a year. I also have know degenerative disk disease. Saw my PCP on Monday and she ordered a lumbar MRI. She told me that normally she would start off with just a spinal xray, but since I've had a cancer DX that "automatically bought you an MRI" as the first diagnostic test. Although the thought of bone mets has certainly crossed my mind (and more than just once), I know that's not the most likely cause of my problem - just as brain mets are not the most likely cause of you having a single pupil dilated.
So try not to waste too much time worrying about the worst it could be when it's probably nothing serious. There will be time enough for worrying IF it becomes necessary to do so - and until then, enjoy the holidays and put it away.

MarieKelly,Thanks for your reply and Gitane thanks for the hugs.
I go this afternoon for the MRI.I should have results by the end of the week I would think.
Please pray it is nothing bad.
It is so weird ,my pupil in left eye will dilate and stay that way 2-3 hours then goe's back to almost normal.doe's stay just slightly bigger that the right pupil.it doe's this 2-4 times a week.I feel pressure in that eye when it is dilated.
Thanks ladies for your kind works and encourgement.

You're welcome, Dee.
Hope your MRI turned out well. I had mine yesterday and PCP called me today with the results - I've got mildly bulging disks in most of the lumbar spine but no cord impingement and NO EVIDENCE OF METASTATIC DISEASE! Yahooooooooo!

Hi,
I just got a call from the nurse and my MRI showed NOTHING serious! small changes in the lining of my brain, not sure what that means but the Dr suggested I see my eye Dr.I had an eye exam complete with dilation back in Sept. Just happens that my husband picks up his new glasses this evening and I am going to ride along and ask if I should see him or an eye specialist.
Thanks so much
