CoQ10

Hi All, I've read on a few of the threads that many of you take CoQ10 supplements when on Herceptin.  We asked our oncologist about this but he said there's no clinical proof that it helps.  I've taken it myself for years (because I take red yeast rice for high cholesterol), and I've read in numerous places that it can help off-set the effects of Herceptin.  My wife is wary about taking supplements while she's having chemo/herceptin (she starts 6x3 TCH followed by a year of Herceptin starting 12/2).

I'm curious as to what others have been told with respect to CoQ10 supplements while on TCH or just Herceptin.  Thanks in advance.

After finishing my TCH I started supplementing with CoQ10 and my ejection fraction increased from 52% to 58%.  I was really worried about another drop... my ef had been slowly declining, so this was fantastic news.  My onc told me the same thing- no clinical proof, blah, blah, blah... but I'm happy with my results! My onc did insist that I wait until finishing the TC before staring the CoQ10.

All the best to you and your wife. (The Taxotere, Carboplatin, Herceptin thread is very helpful!)

    HI,

I took co Q 10 through my entire treatment. My LVF never went below 55.

    I still take coQ 10.

I was told I can take the CoQ10 while on Herceptin alone...not sure if I was on chemo it would be allowed?  (But maybe?)  The main thing I wanted to add is my Aunt has had 2 heart attacks and been managed by a very reputable cardiologist and he is adamant about her taking CoQ10 for her heart.  She has been taking it for years and her Cardio doc says her heart is better now then it's every been.

I know it depends on who you ask when it comes to these supplements...but I've seen too many swear by CoQ10 and their heart.  In fact it's the only supplement I put off getting.  But after 5 yrs of battling bc my EHCO's have always been great.  EF in the 70's...lowest was 65 once.  But just recently it was 60...that concerned me...I can't afford it to drop much more.  I would freak if I had to go off Herceptin so I just ordered CoQ10.  Can't wait to see if my EF goes back up once I've been on it a while.
