Safe massage for breast cancer survivors

Options

It is the time of the year when many organizations are celebrating breast cancer survivors and are partnering with local businesses.  Please be aware that when spas are advertising spa treatments for patients that they have qualified massage therapists that are trained in safe massage during and after treatment for cancer.  Most importantly if you have had nodal dissection for any surgical procedure.

Its an interesting question because they say you should avoid massage for the quadrant where you had surgery to avoid lymphedema but with the kinds of workouts I do, I've decided its a quality of life issue and I just go ahead.  I even have mild lymphedema, and I've never had it get worse after a massage.  I don't necessarily recommend this for others, but if you are worried, just ask the therapist to avoid the should and arm where you had surgery.
