Does therapy location/physician matter?

I am having my lumpectomy at a top cancer center in NYC.

I live too far to commute everyday for my 4 week radiation therapy so I planned on staying near my home.

When I discussed this option  briefly with my surgeon and radiologist who read my films they both  said we will talk about this another time.

Does it matter where and with whom radiation therapy is done? Are there better facilities and doctors than others?

If I must I will travel everyday for 4 hours!

Yes, some rad oncs & facilities absolutely are better than others, although many will tell you breast RT is very basic and can be done anywhere.  I was in a similar situation to yours -- UCLA, where I had some of my tx is 3 hrs. away, so I had to find both a local oncologist for my infusions, as well as a local rad onc.  Luckily, UCLA was able to recommend a UCLA-trained rad onc in my area, and I absolutely loved her.  Knowing her training and background gave me a huge comfort level, plus I felt that she was extra careful because I was still in touch with UCLA about my care.  I'd ask the top cancer center if they can recommend someone in your immediate area.  Chances are, they will also have former associates who have moved on to bigger opportunities at more regional facilities.   Good luck!    Deanna
