I had a sever reaction to my first chemo treatment yesterday.

I had my bp shoot super high ,I  felt head my was going to exploid and I was gasping to breath.

I was only given steroid and ani nausea meds right before treatment.

My question is shouldn't I had gotten benadry also for reactions.

The doctor said it was a reaction to the stuff that is mixed with the taxatere so I will now be getting Abraxane. 

This was late in the day and I hope they didn't just not give my the benadryl as it was getting late

Any help would be great.

I don't think they automatically give the Benadryl.  They didn't give it to me my first time.  I had a reaction the second tx, so then I started getting the premeds.  Even with the premeds, I started to have a reaction during the 4th tx, but my nurse stopped the infusion, waited a little bit, and then restarted it at a slower rate and I was okay.

They gave me mine at a very slow rate as well because I had a reaction to Benadryl earlier in the year.  If I had had a reaction to the Taxatere, I don't know what the alternative would have been, but as it was it was ok.

My chemo nurse said they give you all the side effect meds from the start. I'm getting the benadryl when I start. I have this entire list of stuff to take. Some the day before, during and a few days after.

i'm headed into my 6th and last chemo in october, i've never had a reaction to the taxotere but my dr office gives me dexamthasone (steroids) to take the before, the day of and the day after each chemo to ward off allergic reactions. i also get an IV infusion of steroids before starting taxotere plus my anti-nauseous meds. I've been told that if i have a reaction they will stop teh meds, give me benadryl then restart the taxotere...hope that helps, sorry to hear about yoru reaction, that must have been scary for you

Julie, Where are you getting your treatment?? I recieved TC x 6 and I got benadryl before each treatment.  The first time it was IV, which gave me the leg jerks, so from then on I got it in pill form. I was also on anti nausea meds before tx X 2.

The first time I had Taxatere I had the similar reaction.  The benadryl was given to me immediately.  The second one the adminstered benadryl up front, the third one they slowed the taxotere drip and by the fourth I took it like a champ with no problems.  It's different for everyone.  Hope your next round goes a little more smoothly    than the first.

Sometimes the IV nurses forget!  Taxotere is to be administered VERY slowly for the first 10 minutes with the nurse staying with you to check for any adverse reactions.  If there are none, then the drip can be accelerated.  And this should be the case not just for the first infusion, but for each one thereafter.  It pays to remind the nurse of this!

I was told the same thing - it's not the Taxotere, it's what they mix it in. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have given you the Benadryl, but I'm glad they're giving you Abraxane instead.  I wish I had know that was an option. I had a reaction for #2-#5.  I didn't do #6.  They didn't give me Benadryl at first because I thought I was allergic to it.  They just stopped the Tax and gave me extra steroids and then started it up again slowly.  At #3 they tried the Benadryl and it helped calm things down much quicker and I didn't have a reaction to the Benadryl.  After that, I knew when a Tax reaction was coming on and the nurses knew to stay with me and have their little allergic reaction kit ready and I got the Beny in my pre-meds.  Hope you have an easier time of it with the Abrax!
