bone scan Friday
I finished radiation about a month ago. For the past couple months, I have been having pain in my right leg. I didn't worry about it at first, figuring I probably just bumped my shin on something. The pain has steadily gotten worse. I'm on Tamoxifen, which probably isn't helping, since it makes me ache all over, but this pain is different than the achy pains from Tamoxifen. I went to the ER Monday to try to rule-out a DVT, but they were terrible and didn't do the right tests. The surgeon is sending me Friday for an ultrasound to rule-out a DVT and a bone scan to rule-out mets. He's also concerned because I'm running a fever (was also running one at the ER, and had one the last time the radiation oncologist checked) and because my appetite has been bad for about 6 or 7 weeks (with some slight weight loss - just a few pounds). I asked for the bone scan for my own peace of mind. Now I'm wondering if I'm being a complete hypochondriac, since I was diagnosed at Stage 1. Any input would be appreciated!

Karen - May it all be a touch of hypochondria!
I'm sure this is very scary - I also had serious issues with fevers and such after rads -- turned out that I had an abscess growing in my seroma, and it had to be drained, and packed. I was on antibiotics for months.
And I also had some serious bone pain at the same time, although I didn't put the two together - I had a bone bruise that wasn't healing because of the infection.
Today, I have no infections, and I am on lots of Vitamin D to help bone pain. And I decided after 2 years that the Tamoxifen bone pain wasn't worth it after I had passed the "likely to recur" date, given my low grade and Stage. Oh, wait, you are too!
I am glad that your surgeon is taking this seriously - once you get to the other side of this check, I trust that you will be ok.

I am having a bone scan on Friday too. Just found out my Vitamin D level is 13 and anything under 50 is low, so that could be part of the issue. Good luck!

Karen I'm so sorry I just now read your post. I hope you know I will be sitting on the edge of my chair waiting to know how the scans go and the reults. I posted today on our rad thread my current situation.
Love and a big, big hug!

Thanks to all of you! Sue - I found your post very comforting - I have been racking my brains trying to think of something less scary that it could be. Here's hoping to something radiation-related...

I had the test, but they would not give me the results - said I have to get them from my doctor. Well, it was the surgeon who ordered the tests, it's a Friday afternoon, and he's in surgery, so I'm going to have to wait until Monday morning when I see the oncologist. I have a bad feeling about this - hope I'm just being a hypochrondriac.

Karen I'm so sorry you have to wait. It takes over your mind. I won't tell you to try to not think about it because I know that's impossible. Maybe just try to not think about it too much?? Thinking of you and looking forward to hearing from you on Monday.
Love and hugs, Tracye

Thanks Tracye - I just got back from the store. I don't usually drink much, but bought some alcohol today! It's going to be a long weekend...

Great news! I also had a bone scan on Friday and just got the news that it was NORMAL! Thank God!!

I am so happy you got good results. I wonder if my first thought will ever not be mets.
Now, what else does anybody think might be causing the pain?
I know that in my case, they just kept going, ummmm, until the abscess popped up, red and growing.

Thanks everyone! Looking forward - congratulations on the clean scan! The oncologist thought the Tamoxifen itself might be the culprit. He said we could try a 3-week drug holiday to see if it gets better, but I'm not willing to give the cancer cells a three-week vacation. As long as I know it's not mets and not a DVT, I can live with the pain. He also said it could be shin splints, a torn tendon, etc.
I appreciate everyone's support - I really kind of wigged out over this.
