Natural nausea meds vs prescribed ones

Options

Hi...I'll be starting chemo this Friday (T/C) and had a question... I did post this in the September 2010 chemo forum as well, but wanted to ask here as well...thanks!

Question:

Are ginger chews (gin gins) or the quesy pops (drops) just as effective as the medical nausea meds?  Or are these natural things to be used in conjunction with the prescribed ones?

I really want to avoid the constipation that comes with nausea meds and only have to concentrate on the SEs I can not control as well.

Thanks!

Tori

The nausea meds they give for chemo are big guns and I doubt alternatives will work as well.  They developed these drugs in recent years and they have transformed the experience of having chemo.  I think it would be a good idea to take these alt methods in addition to the prescribed meds because there can be breakthrough nausea.

I found ginger chews helpful along with a supplement called Nausea Ease for the first three treatments and it worked well.  For the last two treatments I had to use the Zofran.  The natural stuff works pretty quickly so if you find yourself still nauseous after about 15 min just pop the Rx cause it'll take a little time to work.

Good luck with your first chemo.  Usually the anxiety of it being your first time and the unknown is worse than treatment!
