I am a female and I post on the Stage IV Board.  I am thinking about my 30 year old son and while I do not want to worry him, I do intend to have a talk with him re: the necessity of breast self exam since it is certainly in our family, although I am not BRAC.

But does anyone know what is the increased risk is for a man if his mother has had breast cancer?  I do not know what that might be and I am wondering if anyone else does.  I'd like to be able to let my son know what that is as well.  Thank you.

Hi Judie - My sense is that his risk is quite small. If you had a BRCA mutation, it would be of greater concern. If he had a BRCA mutation himself, his risk of developing breast cancer would be in the 5-10% range.

I've found that pushing breast self-exam on men doesn't work. It is important for them to know that breast cancer CAN occur in men and, if they feel something odd, they should bring it to the attention of their doctor. Most lumps are found by chance while showering or some other activity.
