So thankful for universal healthcare!
I read something on the weekend that just has me SO bothered and angry. Apparently (according to TalkingPointsMemo.org) former Republican Presidential candidate and Fox News host Mike Huckabee says health insurance is no different from property insurance! And feels insurance for pre-existing conditions equates with someone whose house has just burned down (preumably her own fault (!)) going to an insurer asking for insurance to cover said burned house. Therefore, why should any insurance company be obligated to provide coverage?
Since this way of thinking would affect several BC patients (our American BC sisters) on this Board and elsewhere, I just have to cringe and cry....

Mike Huckabee is from Utah .. just like Glenn Beck. Cut from the same cloth.
Welcome to the U.S.A.

Well, that kind of thinking is in line with a capitalist mentality, wherein profit rules above all else. So what if people are dying from lack of care? Thank God the insurance companies could make their profits! Feh.
E
-
And Huckabee is a former pastor......I wonder if he used to preach about social justice? You're right -- when profit rules, caring and compassion are locked out.
Enjoyful, how ARE you?
-
That is why Huckabee is NOT our President. Wait until one of their f*t a$$es goes broke from healthcare bills and they will fast change their tune or should I say Monte Cristo for TUNA!!
-
Huckabee is not fit for politics IMO. He needs to take his guitar and bring Vaudville back! Equating health insurance with home insurance makes him more of an idiot than I thought he was. I paid a fortune for over 30 years to have home owners and flood insurance and when Katrina hit, neither one would pay for the damage to my home and now I live in an apartment in another state! Yes, we need to bring Vaudville back and get a lot of those politicians tap dancing or doing something else besides pretending they know what is best for our country. I am waiting on pins and needles for this Thursday when the Repubs will supposedly tell us their political agenda. Could be another comedy hour if the don't do some intelligent thinking before they face us. I am so confused about who I want to vote for in November that if a "monkey" ran, I think I would vote for the monkey instead!
-
Wow lizzymack..............maybe you could express your opinion without the personal attacks........just a thought............Shokk
-
Shokk: How about all the ladies in our group who are pleading for help because they can't pay their medical bills? It doesn't get much more "personal" than that. Politicians attack each other "personally" daily especially when they are running against one another so I think we have a right to post what we really think about them. It's a known fact that the politicians once elected do what they feel is best for "them" so I think the public has a right to voice their outrage at them especially when it comes to our healthcare problems. So lizzymack was a bit colorful. I don't even know what her explicits meant. I think she forgot to put the "k" in the word or maybe I just have a dirty mine.
-
Did he actually say that? I thought there's a limit to one's ignorance. Apparently, there's not.
-
Medigal I am just sick of all the name calling.........I am sick of hearing from my side that Obama is a Socialist........and I am sick of the left calling conservatives racists.........crazy.........the "nuts and sluts" name calling......if you disagree with someone they are either crazy or if female they are or were a slut.........and that goes for both sides........I took Lizzy's statement to be calling Huckabee fat.........(he does have weight issues)and of course she has the right to do so.......all I am saying if all of us would stop name calling and stick to the facts then maybe we could even have an intelligent debate on this website concerning our health care..........Shokk
-
Oops ... I made a mistake earlier. It's Romney that's from Utah! Sorry.
-
Lizzy .. I'm hungry and that monte cristo sounds really good right now. I don't want no stinkin' tuna .. but that's all that's in the cupboard!
Bren
-
Hey Bren...........also just to get the facts straight.......Glenn Beck is not from Utah.......he grew up in Seattle.........his father owned a bakery............Shokk
-
Off topic but,,, I've always wondered: What do you call a person from Utah? There are Texans (hi Shokk!), Virginians, Michiganders, Pennsylvanians, Floridians etc. Anyone know?
-
Oops again on Beck .. however, Beck and Romney are fellow Mormons. That must be why I was so confused.
Linda .. "Utahn" is what they are called. I lived in Utah for a number of years. Gorgeous state .. strange religion.

Hi Linda!
I'm doing well, thanks! My Canadian came south for a few days and we had a lovely visit. I took him to the ball game and we got to sit 3 rows behind the Jays' dugout! Sadly, his beloved Jays lost that game in extra innings. (*snort*)
:-)
How are you??
E
-
Thanks Bren! And I've always wondered about the term Michigander -- seems to me it should be Michiganite (less goosey sounding!).
Enjoyful, great to hear from you! Yep, the Jays are just sitting at .500; another disappointing year, sadly..... I'm okay. Pulled a weed out of the garden on Saturday and it turned out to be a stinging nettle...ouch ouch ouch! Other than that, everything's great! They're saying this should be a vintage year for Niagara wines -- hurray!
-
Utahns, for real? It sure is a beautiful place. I went hiking in Zion National Park and I won't forget it any time soon.
Great news on the wines, Linda! I will be up there for the next Icewine Festival for sure!
E
-
Hi E ... Zion is one of my all time favorite places! I was fortunate to be able to visit there often when I lived in So. Utah. Were you able to visit Bryce and the Grand Canyon? The north rim is my favorite ... less crowded!
hugs,
Bren

Come on Shokk, it's not really name calling when people bad-mouth politicians. That is a part of the oath they have to take, I think. They expect it. However, I don't believe in putting labels on even politicians. I may not like certain stands that Obama has taken since becoming the Prez but I get so irritated when they start with the "Socialist" stuff. DH and I have had some of our worse fights when he tries to watch Beck who is great at labeling people. I want to be informed about what they are doing. I am so turned off by political labels that I don't even know what "I" am. If someone had to label me they would have a hard time. I do what I think needs to be done at a certain given time and could care less about politically what that makes me. I change political parties like others change socks. I am not a yellow, purple, or green dog anything!
BTW, I love Utah and I think they are called Utahians but what do I know. I just like to guess at things!

Ah, speaking of healthcare: Some people think that the single-payer system will make it difficult for docs to make the kind of income some folks think they deserve FWIW, 59 docs each billed the Ontario Ministry of Health over $1 million last year. Many of them were ophthalmologists who make a pretty grand living from seniors' cataracts! And....less than 3% of their fees goes to admin costs.
Medigal -- are you registered as an Independent? (Just wondering, not prying!). We Canucks don't register with any political party, although if we donate we do become "card-carrying members".
-
Bren, I wasn't able to visit the Grand Canyon. I'd spent a week in Las Vegas for work and had the weekend to do something fun. My sister recommended Zion and I was so glad I went! I don't even know what Bryce is, so I probably didn't visit it! I did get to see and smell some rain in the desert on the way out and back. A great solo trip all around.
Linda, I would think that docs would like working under a single-payer system. Less time spent worrying about payment, fewer admin people and costs related to billing and copays and all that nonsense, thus more time focusing on the patient and doing what you were trained to do.
-
lindasa: I "was" a Democrat until I saw what they were doing to the Healthcare Bill and would not answer any of my concerns. So I had my partner (I hate that term "DH" it is not befitting to all of us) go down with me and change to Republican. Now I have tried for months to get "them" to give me their agenda especially on Healthcare and I still haven't heard. So....next step may be Independent just so I can voice my irritation at "both" parties. I am not so stupid that I don't know it will be a wasted vote but anger makes one behave in irrational ways. This Thursday when the Republicans are supposed to (Heavens be Merciful!) give us their agendas on important issues, will decide if "we" vote Republican or just play hop scotch with the ballots in November. The problem with being Independent is that from what I have found in my research, we have very few Independents running in Ky where we are. So not registered "yet" as Independent but thinking about it if the other two parties don't grow some consciences and intelligence between now and November. I asked them 4 questions of great concern to me and all I got back from Sen. McConnell was "the common sense thing to do is to vote Republican". Just ignored ALL 4 of my questions! Well I think the common sense thing to do is get HIM out of office! Just my opinion, ladies and please notice I gave it without using any cuss words.
BTW, I like the way you Canucks do it!! We could learn a LOT from your system. I do not like the way it is done in the US.
-
Linda .. I was a registered Dem. I need to register in Virginia ... and will do so as an Independent.
E .. Bryce is also a canyon. I'll see if I can find a pic for you.
Medigal ... cussing doesn't bother me ... I'm good at it.
-
Ohhhhhhhhh! I could NEVER look at Bryce Canyon and cuss even at DH!! We took trips there a couple of times years ago and it was such a thrilling place to see. I loved it much better than the Grand Canyon because the colors are so awesome! No! No cussing at Bryce Canyon. That has to be what Heaven must look like! Thanks for posting the pic!
-
Ohhhh WOW. I want to go to there!
-
Medigal - Check out ThinkProgress.org today re the Repub's suggested healthcare changes compared to provisions in the Affordable Healthcare Act. Interesting.....!
-
lindasa: WHAT Republican healthcare changes? They did exactly what I expected them to do. They are taking what we ALREADY have and rewording it to make it sound like they came up with something new! Now I am really mad! Do they think we are really so stupid we can't read and figure out what they are doing? I missed the stuff on tv because I was spending two days figuring how to appeal a denial from MY insurance over something they know they should be paying for? I am so sick of how our health-no-care system works, I am ready to move to wherever that place is that says they have great healthcare. Yesterday my local supermarket's pharmacy wanted me to come in for 30 minutes so they could discuss all my meds with me and they said my insurance would pay them for the 30 minutes. I told them I discuss my meds only with the doctors who give them to me and I am NOT changing to cheaper generic drugs I know I have problems with because my GREAT health insurance doesn't want to pay their part for the drugs!
Well, it looks like the Repubs are not offering anything better for us. The joke is that if they get the Majority, the Dems will just pay them back by refusing to vote for things they want. It's all a sick game of "I got you last!" Where are those decent country caring Independents we need??
-
Good answer to your pharmacy! Whenever I pick up a prescription (new or old) my pharmacist always asks me if any of my (other) meds) have changed, and prints out all the info about this Rx that I need to know. Heck, she doen't even get paid to do this!! And she is not the exception.....
-
I don't even know what my pharmacist looks like ....
-
Hey Bren -- maybe you'll get the same kind of phonecall that Medigal did. Ah, then you'll get to meet your pharmacist!!!
