Juicing

Options

I see this come up quite a bit in these forums and am interested in learning more.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  Books I could read?  Websites? Machines?  I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks, Kim

Juicing is pretty expensive since so much of the fruit is wasted. You lose much of the fiber which is really important to colon health and regularity. As a "lifestyle" it was unheard of until someone invented a juicer to make his fortune.

Whole foods are a lot healthier for you. They are more filling, contain more nutrients, more filling per calorie, and provide other benefits (such as the aforementioned fiber).

I have a champion juicer that I really like.  I bought it back in the 80s and then it sat idle until I started juicing again in 07.  My own personal preference is juice without the pulp.  If you like pulpy drinks, your best choice would be a vitamix.  Also plan on juicing lots of veggies.  Check out the forums at crazysexylife.com and search for green smoothies.  You'll find lots of great suggestions.

During the summer I love love love watermelon juice.  I juice the rind, seeds, everything.  It's so juicy, there's hardly anything left all for pulp.  So unless you're in the habit of eating watermelon rind and all, this is one juicing choice where you'll get more from your melon by juicing than you would otherwise.

I also juice twice a day--carrots  & apples  & grapes, afternoon- veggies including kale & cucumbers.  The best juice book I found was "The complete Book of Juicing" from Michael Murray, N.D forward by Jay Korcich.  I like this book best because it had lots of recipes & gave detailed info on benefits & nutrients of each fruit & vegetable and listed what types of juices were good for different kinds of disease.  I believe it is true that you get the most out of vitamins & enzymes from fresh fruits & veggies concentrated in juice.

I believe I read how Jay Kordich beat his cancer diagnosis by drinking 8 glasses a day of carrot & apple juice.  I only do 2 a day & eat additional whole fruits & veggies.  I truly believe the American diet of processed foods, hormones added to chicken, beef & milk have had a lot to do to increase disease in America.

Cancer has awakened in me a time for change to a healthier diet.  I pray that I'm around long enough to let you know that this works.

I have a pint of carrot and c elery juice -  about three times a week. I use the pulp in breads casseroles and soups. At last  i have bought myself a good juicer -  I have been juicing for years -  not so much fruits all though I do add them -  as they ar easy to eat.  I find the carrot celery jouuice seems to balance my body and if I am feeling bad I drink it every day -  even if I cannot eat.  Wheat grass and green veggies like kale etc addded to fruit make for good combinations. I have a Jack Lalane power juicer -  model MT 1000. I think Amazon was the best deal. I have had the cheap ones on and off for years -  you can pick them up at garage sales until you decide to go for the good one - and I give them to people who are starting off. Now I have a good one for me -  i searched the net until I found it at a great price and no shipping -  yay! I looove my juicer but do not ignore the pulp -  sometimes i freeze it until salad time or soup time etc comes around -  just label it well.  Linda
