Okay, hysterectomy years ago. Fine. Lost both breasts 2 years ago. Okay. I'm still feeling pretty okay. But what the heck is with the brown age/sun spots???? Wrinkles I can handle. Gray hair looks good on me, it's coming in all nice and frosty. The saddlebags at my hips come in useful in line-ups sometimes. It's all good. But not the age spots!!!

I've tried a Vitamin C skin product. Don't waste your money. What have you done?

Hmmmm.  I finished chemo 17 months ago and no age spots yet.  However, I do have delightful spider veins on my legs, feet and face.  And my face slid off my head.  I'm thinking about 25K would fix me up nicely.  Too bad BC took all my money.

Have you tried the fade creams?  I know there are laser treatments that can get rid of the spots.  But it's expensive. :(

Um............Barbe, don't go out in the sun? As an Aussie who lives in the 'Sunshine State' of Queensland, we have been told for years not to go out in the sun due to the high UV rays we get here in summer.

Too late for this old bird.....got the sunspots to show for it!  Personally, I believe it's genetic, you get old, you get those damn spots.  Did try a sample of some lotion or other a few years ago which sort of worked until I realised how much a bulk pot would cost.  They came back pretty quickly after stopping the use of the cream.

I did hear that baby urine was good though!

    Sheila.

Sheila, we don't get a ton of sun up here and I don't go on holidays to get sun anymore. I'm sure it's from damage years ago when I did worship the sun god....sigh. But come on! Isn't there a home-grown recipe that someones great grandma passed on????

We have huge Vit D issues due to the lack of sun in fact, but the Vit D won't get rid of the spots!

I read someone who lost all her spots during chemo but they came back. Ya gotta wonder what was in the chemo?

So only an expensive secret cream? If it took them permanently, but they sound more like a bleach that you have to keep using....

barbe ~ My primary doc, who is also board certified in dermatology & has her own skin care line, used one of those wands they use to freeze basel cell skin cancers.  She was actually treating a small basel cell on my upper arm (this was pre-bc), and spontaneously threw in the back of the hand tx!   It turned the spots quite dark for a few days, then they literally fell off.  Now, after chemo, and also being out in the sun a lot, I have some again, but they're more diffuse and not as dark -- more like freckling.  So I'm not sure if it would work as well.  But you might ask a dermatologist about it.    Deanna

Some I get on my arms and legs and they are like brown and I can scratch them off. That can't be right....can it?

For those rough patches... I use aloe every night on arms... really helps get rid of keratosis like places. I used to have great skin. Arimidex has changed that :-(

I get them and so did my mother, curiously I got one quite large on the cheek in the same spot she did. I go to dermatalogist each year and he puts ''azote'' ( french and I think it's ''nitrogen'' in english) on them it forms a scub and falls without leaving any mark. It's really great.

Mine are more lie the guy here. Kinda ugly light brown. I know it's from being in the sun years ago...my face is now thanking me....sigh.

The nitrogen is interesting...I've had it used for a wart on my foot!

In the "olden days" they were called "liver spots" but I have no idea why.    I also don't know why some people get them and others don't.  I don't think there is any way to get rid of them.  They are a part of aging to my inept knowledge.

I think if one eats liver every day they will go away ...in 20 years- LOL

I have them really bad on my face.  1st one I got when only about 28 & had just restarted the pill.  its big.

I have been usign Retin A for 2 years off & on...it is supposed to help...Sometimes it seems like it is & then they start to darken again.

Jaimie is that what your Derm had you use?

I had sun spots/freckling on my face and my derm used a laser. They did get darker and then fell off, but you have to be really careful to avoid the sun or use really good sunscreen. I did it in the fall when I knew I wouldn't be exposed to alot of sun for many months.  It really didn't cost that much - depends on how many you have, but they can zap alot of spots within minutes. I think it cost me $40. Well worth it to me!

Thats not bad at all Lindy.

I am seeing a Derm in a couple of weeks- I will ask about it.

That would sure make me feel good to get rid of them.

     Was it very painful?

InnocentSo sorry Barbe could not resist this one. This is what liver spots look like. Not the ones on our faces. Barbe I have a couple as well from my years of golfing(sundamage) I just cover them with concealer.

THAT photo is SO disgusting!!  Those are NOT the type of spots I was referring to as "liver spots". They are light brown colored spots on the skin. Maybe you can post some vomit to go with that photo and really get me to throw up lunch!  I have a sense of humor but sometimes we need to realize that everyone on here is not ready to see such grotesque photos.  I was expecting more of the beautiful flowers or other stuff I enjoy.  Not stuff like that!  Couldn't you have at least sent it to Barbi as a PM?

I am very interested to know what your derms say. Anyone remember the ad that Brooke Shields did where she showed the advanced age look of what her skin would look like 20 years or so down the road? Yikes! I have stayed out of the sun for the past 10-15 years or so, but I'm medium skin so I never burned but got very, very dark when I scuba dived or boated. Oh well, in my old age I'll look like I had a good life! heheheheheh Kiss

I just read in all my Googling that liver spots can be caused by a thyroid deficiency. Huh, the circle is tightening. Or is that a noose?

That's really interesting, Barbe.  I think I'll up my Iodoral and see if it makes any difference in mine.

They also mention to eat seaweed (kelp I guess). Isn't that linked to iodine? Undecided

Kelp is a natural source of iodine, Barbe, but there's a lot of concern about its degree of contamination.  Iodoral or Lugol's Iodine (same basic product, I believe, just different forms) might be purer sources.

Well that would make a lot of sense! Organic doesn't always mean pure unfortunately....
