Mastectomy and Insurance

Despite a very positive prognosis from the surgeon recommending lumpectomy and radiation, I am still leaning toward mastectomy.  What I don't know is can I choose a bilateral mastectomy and have it covered by insurance?  My IDC with DCIS has lobular features which frighten me - an increased percentage that the other breast will eventually become an issue.  In addition, I have enormous breasts, have always hated their size and wanted a reduction but could never get a doc to get it through insurance.  If insurance doesn't cover it, will the BS still do it if requested?  I don't see him again until next Thursday and knowing this would help me along in the decision making.

My insurance did cover my bilateral even though one side was prophylactic. In my experience the office manager at the breast surgeon's office usually has a pretty good idea of what different insurance companies will cover. She said my insurance generally doesn't give them any trouble but if they did she'd have the surgeon talk to them. :) Hope everything works out how you want it to!

KatherineNaomi - Thank you for answering and it never occurred to me to check with the office manager - will do tomorrow.  Two more biopsies in the morning.
