Just came across this article that said

"Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Breast cancer survivors in China who ate tofu, soy milk and fresh beans as part of a diet rich in soy protein had a lower risk of dying and less chance their cancer would return, a study found "

Here is the rest of the article:

lago ~ You're going to get opinions all over the place on this question, based on what women have been told by their docs, which is all over the place.  I can tell you that UCLA, where I've been treated, and where they research questions like this in depth before giving an opinion, says soy in moderation should be part of our diet -- with one exception -- and that's soy protein isolates, which is the kind of soy that's in soy protein powder and most energy bars.  That soy has been modified or concentrated, and should be avoided.  But tofu, edaname, soy milk, and other soy products are encouraged -- in moderation.    Deanna

Oh that's good to know. Guess when I'm through with chemo I can still have my hot & sour soup (Sun Wah in Chicago makes the best… and the roast duck is to die for), soy sauce with my sushi and on occasion edaname Wink

I love Asian food but it's not something I eat daily. I should be OK.

It seems everytime I read something there are always two camps. It could drive you nuts trying to figure out who's right.

Both my onc and my surgeon say that soy in its natural form is okay.  It would be hard to maintain a low fat / no red meat/ minimal dairy  diet without some soy foods.  I also stay away from processed soy foods; like soy burgers and soy bars.

I just wanted to add that some women avoid soy because of concerns about contamination and genetic modification, more than concern about its phytoestrogen properties.  I always buy organic soy products, but you may want to read up on the contamination concerns.  There's been some good information about it on the Natural Girls thread here.    Deanna

Keep in mind that if you are hypothyroid, you should not be eating soy products.  My endo says soy sauce is ok b/c it is fermented.  (whew - I love my Asian cuisine)
