treatment in burlington, ontario
I've just moved back to Canada from the U.S. - my new onc is in Burlington (where I reside) - wondering why people here are goingt to Hamilton (Jervinsky) or Toronto (Sunnybrook) - should I be going to one of these places too? I am waiting on getting a bunch of tests - won't happen for two more weeks - my mamo showed a new cancer in other breast - I am waiting a month for scan and ultrasound???? Called my onc to ask a question - she's gone for a week and so is her assistant - no one wanted to help me over the phone - I am not happy.

Sandy, sorry you are going through this yet again. I don't know the answer to your question but I am in Toronto and get my treatment at Sunnybrook. In my experiences, even when my own on was away, there was always somebody who could respond to my issues. I also never had to wait a month for scan or ultrasound ... maybe a few days ... I think about 10 days was the longest. But I've also had a test done within 24 hours. Best wishes

Hello,
I'm at Sunnybrook too and have had the most amazing care over the past 11 years. If you are a BRCA 1 or 2 carrier, I highly recommend Dr. Ellen Warner as an oncologist. I've NEVER waited for tests. And this spring I decided to have a prophylactic mastectomy - told them July 20 would be a great day for me and sure enough, had my surgery that very day.
It's an amazing hospital and the cancer centre is really nice. But, it's also REALLY busy, so expect wait times for clinic visits.

Michelle:
Thanks so much for good wishes and your quick reply BUT I am trying to find out WHY I should or shouldn't remain with Jos. Brant Memorial - seems there isn't anyone there that is younger than late 70s - I am a young(who am I kidding) 64 and feel like I am getting no help whatsoever - they seem to "handle" (read manipulate) people there - only help is from my onc. nurses and doctor in South Carolina and my PCP here who is awesome - as I am about to have a huge bunch of tests and surgery I want to feel at "home" not "in the wind" like I am now.

I am seen at the Juranvinski cancer center in Hamilton. I have had a conversation with my Onc there regarding a couple of inconclusive scans with no definite answers. My Onc encouraged me to get a second opinion and highly recomended "Sunny Brook" -His words, if you were my wife and looking for a second opinion you would be seen at Sunny Brook-as they are known for being the best in the Region (for breast cancer). Wish i had known that at the time of my dx. I will be asking for a referral to be seen at Sunny Brook very soon.

Well, finally news from my onc's office - I had to call them - I had CT scans finally on August 24 and 26 and today after two weeks and a day of no sleep and nerves stretched to the limit I called and went ballistic - it took them two hours to call me back and onc wasn't even in office (again) today - finally late this afternoon nurse read my results to me over the phone and said they weren't official but - they were GOOD!!! Turns out the lymph node on my left that had the onc worried was the result of "previous" infection, the micro calcifications in my left breast deemed by the radiologist to be not indicative of mets but should be checked in six months, right breast (where the original cancer was) very dense scar tissue (duh!) and NED also bonescan showed two areas one on skull which wasn't anything - spine shows sign of degenerative disc- I still told the nurse off - she said that she couldn't explain but was very sorry that I had been overlooked AGAIN (her words not mine) - I am going to have to find a new onc which is going to be painful as there isn't anyone locally - seems like everyone is going into Toronto which is a huge trip from here but my life is worth it I think. I can't believe I was put through this - couldn't they just have run tests and not mentioned BMX, etc.?
