What could this be?

    Hello All,

This is my first post here. My mother (64 years) had been diagonised with Stage 3 BC in April 2009 and has undergone masectomy, chemo and radiation which completed in Nov 2009. She is currently on Arimidex and all her scans and blood works have been good till date. Infact, she has regained all her lost weight, excercises regularly and is leading a very active life.

She was staying with us in the city during this last one year and now has gone to our country side home to enjoy the monsoons. However, since last 7-8 days she has been complaining of a burning sensation (more like warm feeling) in her chest and back. This bout last for almost like 5-6 hours and doesn't cause any pain and comes and goes during the day. Other than this, she is doesn't have any complaints. Her last blood work, chest x-ray and USG were done a month back and all were normal. Just wanted to check on what this could be? Have any of you also experienced such warm feeling in the chest and back area?

The surgeon is in the city and we arranged for another doctor ( also a surgeon in the country side) to examine her while the surgeon instructed him over the phone.  The surgeon says that it must be due to some infection in the operated site and has instructed to apply magnesium sulphate cream and the warm feeling should subside. In case it doesn't in 10-15 days than she should go for a PET scan.

Just worried on what this could be. Has any one else felt this way? Should we call her back to the city? She really enjoys staying in our ancestral home in the country side where its peaceful and scenic.

angel ~ Has your mother had any problems with lymphedema?  Many women mistakenly believe lymphedema (LE) only affects the arm(s), but it can happen in our chests, backs and sides, as well.

I'm no expert on it, although I do suffer from it a bit myself, and the burning sensation is part of the syndrome.  Also, hot humid weather and exercise can exaccerbate it and make it flare up.

I'm sure others who know more will be along soon to weigh in, but in the mean time, you might want to Google "truncal lymphedema" to see if this sounds like it could be her problem, which can be controlled with therapy.  Hopefully, that's all it is.      Deanna

Deanna has a good point about lymphedema being a good possiblity.  However, she really should see a doctor so that can be sure there isn't something else that could be more serious going on in that area.
