I am wondering if anyone on this board has had a good experience with an onco who advises and administers program for patient after surgery in the Miami/Broward area?. My exp so far with Miami Sylvester personell at best has been questionable (Radiologist there)  The surgeon  we chose at Sinai  told me he could cure my wife. Thought that was strange (he will do  lumpectomy and sentinal lobe surgery tommorrow )I  hope that his skill set is there but what puzzles me is when I asked his office to  recommend onco to plan treatment they told me that he is the one to plan a program for my  wife after surgery. and  everything I read here points to a special oncologist that plans and  not a surgeon and that is why I am seeking advice as to who goes next  if any of the ladies on this site have a recommendation based on their exp ,I would  be appreciatetive rather than  "one size fits all medicine"  I very nervous not to make mistakes that are irreversable. Thank you all! diagnsed as ILC estro+ proges+ her2- e-cadherin- (No other info size, stage, grade

Hello, J; my oncologist referred me to my surgeon, so I know you can go either direction on this matter.  I thought my first surgeon--at Moffitt in Tampa--was too arrogant for me to agree to let him take my case, so my next stop was oncology, and I made the appointment myself.  You don't have to do anything or let anyone do anything that you feel isn't right for you.

In my area we do have a few surgeons who do both oncology and surgery; they have had extra education and are board certified in each.

I don't know if your doc is an oncology surgeon (or surgical oncologist; whatever) but not all cancer requires post-surgical treatment.  Until you know if there is evidence of cancer in lymph nodes or elsewhere, you don't really know if there is a need for further treatment (other than anti-hormonals usually used in ER/PR + cancers).  The PET scan your doc has ordered will tell a little more of the story; if lymph nodes light up, I'd look for an oncologist, if your surgeon isn't an oncologist.  You don't need your surgeon's approval to be seen by anyone you want; I called mine directly and they took my case without any referral from anyone.  That said, I knew I had cancer in at least one node because that node was the only way I found it.

I don't know anyone in Miami or Broward but I do think you are wise to be cautious and consider your options very carefully.

    Warmest regards,

    Cathy

    cbn,

I see you were using Moffit, in Tampa.  I would love if you could advise me which Dr. you used.  My Dr. is a surgeon/oncologist, I thought he was with Moffit, but found out when his older brother sent me to him he in't with Moffit.  If you would rather private message the info and anything else you could advise me about i would be so greatfull.

    Karen
