Thinning Hair
Comments

I completed treatment in April '09, having had chemo first (4 rounds of a/C and 16 weekly treatments with Taxol, then a bilateral mastectomy, and then radiation to my right chest wall and underarm. This past March I had reconstruction with lat flaps and expander... I had my last expansion yesterday. I am feeling so much better and better about myself, starting with a personal trainer to get my strength back, and trying to figure out what to do about my thin hair. It was very thick and curly before chemo, now slightly wavy and very thin. I understand this is very likely a side effect of Arimidex. Ojon products make my hair look better, but I am wondering if I should give Nioxin a try. Does anyone have experience or advise that might help me figure this out? Many thanks.

I do a combination of treatments that seem to help make my hair fuller. Nioxin shampoo and conditioner, Biotin 5 g and Fish Oil. Good luck.

There is another line of products which might also help. Nourish's Awaken and Replenish shampoo and conditioner. It's reputed to keep hair in the growth stage. I've begun using it and we'll see what, if any, results I get. The fragrance reminds me of almonds and I'm not getting an allergic reaction like I do with many others. The cost is less than Nioxin, but still not cheap. I found it through Amazon, one of their outside vendors.

I saw a story on GMA this morning where they are tattooing the thin areas in on peoples heads and it really looked amazing.

Bump...
I am VERY concerned about my thinning hair and I haven't even HAD chemo or rads!
And it started about 3 years ago before my BC dx!
However, it is MUCH WORSE now...maybe from my 3 surgeries/anesthesia?
I've been taking BIOTIN for about a year...doesn't seem to help.
Anyone else having acute hair loss who hasn't had chemo/rads?
Only other thing I can think of is I take Lexapro...switched from Celexa about 3 years ago due to insurance coverage.
Could that be causing it?
I'm almost 48, premenopausal.
HELP!
Thanks,
Violet -
Hi Violet. I'm getting very thin in the center/top front. Have you had your thyroid checked? I'm thinking mine is female pattern baldness because my Dad had several almost-bald little aunties. I also lose handfuls of hair anytime I'm super stressed or anxious for any length of time. I'm trying taking iron and going back to iodized salt instead of kosher, as I've read deficiencies in iron & iodine can do this. I think vitamin D has helped a little. Sure makes me unhappy. I had very fine thinnish hair anyway.

Hi Violet and Melissa, I have spots of baldness thought out the center of my head. I went to a Dermatologist and he was giving me cortisone injections until the insurance wouldn't pay for it, they called it cosmetic. Back to trying otc products. Haven't found anything that helps yet.
