Thyroid and BC

Options

Good Morning.

What do you know about the connection of thyroid disease and BC?  I am hypothyroid and have been for many years.  I am thinking I developed both IDC and Thyroid disease around the same time although I was not diagnosed for many years...6-8 with IDC.  Very slow growing and the docs said it could have been there for 8-10 years.

I just asked for a T3 test.  Never had one.  It was 39 and the range is 87-165.  So I have upped my Levothyroxin and have been referred to an endocrinologist.  Finally!!!

Is there any evidence or suspicion that low or high thyroid function is related to BC?

Thank you,

Shirley

Hi sschmidt -- I don't have any info, but I did notice while browsing the active topics that there is another thread on this topic.  Very active... entitled "Iodine, Thyroid and Breast Cancer" -- have you seen it?  If not, just use the search function (top right of this sight) and type in the word "thyroid" and you will find it easily.  Cheers!

Weird.....I remember I read on internet somewhere saying that usually women with thyroid problem will have less chance to get BC than other people.....??

Anyway, one of my friend got thyroid  problem after chemo treatment,  her doctor said there is nothing related to chemo but I still think there was some sort of linkage

There is a connection.  I have read that hypothyroid is related to a higher risk of breast cancer.  I had hypo for about 7 years before BC diagnosis.  Check out about.com's Thyroid forum for more info.

There is also a Vitamin D link - as a higher percentage of women in the more northern parts of the US have a higher risk of hypo and a higher risk of BC.

I have been hypothyroid for about 20 years which was 10 yrs before my first breast cancer diagnosis. One weird thing with me is that when they do scans etc now they cannot seem to even FIND my thyroid and often think its been removed umtil I tell them otherwise. Maybe because it stopped workimg so many years ago it just shriveled up and went away???? Who knows, not me. Anyway, I take Synthroid everyday so that makes up for it. Whether or not there is a higher incidence of bc among women with thyroid problems, I have no idea but will check out about.com's thyroid section as suggested above.

I was dx'd with ThyCa two months after my 1 yr cancerversary mark.  I do think there is a direct correlation between the two.  There is some great information under the Iodine thread and there are several other threads discussing Thyroid and BC just do a quick search for thyroid in the search menu

I had hyperthyroidism and am being monitored for abnormal mammos/us's.  I take synthroid too and have a T4 test coming.  Just thought I'd comment because my Mother and my Aunt also have had thyroid problems.  My Mother has always been hypo and on synthroid for years But she has many liver concerns and diabetic type problems. She doesn't discuss it much. My Aunt her older sister just passed away in her early 80's.  My Aunt had her thyroid surgically removed somewhere in the 1970's.  She passed from luekemia.
She and my Mother never had any breast issues whatsoever.

I also come from a family with an almost unbroken history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis on my mother's side.  I have been thinking that there's a link between that and my ulcerative colitis, since both are considered autoimmune disorders, and my thyroiditis predates my bc by so many years that, at least in my case, I can't see a connection.
