Running after surgery

Hi,

I had a Lumpectomy/ Partial Mastectomy with senital node removal two weeks ago.  I saw my surgeron about 1.5 weeks ago and he said that I could exercise but not run until I heal.  My question is that he never gave me a time frame.  I did start running again yesterday, it did not hurt while running but I notice after it seemed to hurt alttle and is still sore and a little hard.  So, my question is how soon after surgery did you start exercising / running again.  Running seems to be the only thing that gets my mind off of things so not doing it for 2 plus weeks has been painful.

Thanks, Jenn

Jen, the best thing to do is call your Dr and ask him. He is the only one who can tell you for sure when it is safe to return to running and how much. After I had a double mastectomy I felt exhausted for weeks. I usually exercise for an hour every day and I could barely walk around my block for 10 mins. However I did more and more as I felt better and by about 5-6 weeks I am almost up to my full one hour, but I do get tired by the end of the day. I think the key is I would not push it, but let your body heal. Surgery puts your body through a huge ordeal and although getting up and moving around is good you don't want to overdo it. You should always run everything by your Dr. first. good luck, and I understand your passion for running, my husband is an addict and he just did a half marathon on Sunday! I started running before surgery and plan to pick it back up in a few months.

Jenn, I don't know if this link thing will work, but there is a thriving thread of runners here:

Somewhere on that same forum area, is also a question: How soon after surgery....

Good luck- you need your sanity, but don't overdo things!
