Sulforaphane in broccoli, cauliflower, kale etc.

Options

Has anyone tried eating lots of Sulforaphane containing vegetables to help slow down breast cancer cell growth?  (Cauliflower, Broccoli, Kale etc.)  What are your thoughts? I've read quite a few medical articles and it seems worth a try...

    Sounds like a good component to a healthy diet.  Sure won't do any harm and should be beneficial in many ways.  My wife is trying her best to eat as much cruciferous veggies as possible.

    The best source of sulphoraphane is broccoli sprouts. John Hopkins did the research. I believe they said it was best to eat an ounce a day. I had trouble getting good qulaity broccoli sprouts on a consistent basis - so I take the OncoplexES - which is the patented broccoli sprout extract that John Hopkins used and it is a high dose Sulphoraphane in capsules.

    Beth: I just bought a bottle of Broccology, which is a supplement made from broccoli sprouts. I am sure my Oncologist will tell me not to take it, but I would really like to start while I am still in chemotherapy. Do you know if this would be a good idea? Thanks for your help!

    I am not familiar with that product. I looked it up and it seems to be broccoli extract, not broccoli sprout extract - it said it contained at least 5%Glucoraphanin - it did not mention sulphoraphane. SO I am not sure.

    Having said that - I believe there is value in all cruciferous vegetables.

    I take the ES version - which is 100 mg Sulforaphane Glucosinolate. I take the higher dose, versus the lower 30mg because I have an underactive Phase 2 detoxification and this helps that as well. I believe the studies were done on the 30mg dose, which I believe is equivalent to an ounce of broccoli sprouts a day.

    Edited: I read the Xymogen pdf and  It does appear that Glucoraphanin is the same thing as SGS - Sulforaphane Glucosinolate - so if Broccology has 5% and your product contains 100mg - then you are getting 5mg of SGS a capsule.

    I didn't start making dietary changes until after my treatments were over (except tamoxifen). After reading "The Cancer Survivor's Guide, Foods that help you fight back!" by Neal D. Barnard, MD and Jennifer K. Reilly, RD. I've stopped eating meat and most dairy. And I eat lots of cruciferous vegetables. From the research I've done, it seems that real, whole vegetables are better than supplements, so I try to get broccoli or cauliflower, brussels sprouts, or one of the others in every day. I tried sprouting my own broccoli seeds, but they grew mold. Not sure what I did wrong, because I've sprouted other things successfully.

    I believe in casting a really wide net with cancer.

     I eat a 95 % organic, High Raw, mostly vegetarian diet. I haven't had dairy or gluten in 6 years and no beef for 4 years. I totally agree that whole foods and an anti-cancer diet are extremely important. In my case, I don't believe it is enough. Partly because I did not do chemo or rads and I  refused ARimidex/Tamoxifen. Partly because I was a raw food vegetarian when diagnosed with  breast cancer.

    I found I had a lot of underlying weaknesses that needed to be addressed and it was evident that diet alone was not getting the job done for me.

    That's why, although I eat tumeric, I take curcumin supplements, I drink green tea, but take extra in capsules, I eat cruciferous veggies, but take DIM and SGS supplements, I eat citrus and berries, but take amla and camu camu for extra Vitamin C. I also, like many others on this forum, take a number of other supplements. If at all possible, I try to find ones that are as close to nature as possible. I think the beauty of the natural girls/alternative forum is that we all seem to be  empowered to finding our own solutions to the same goal.

    BTW - I couldn't grow sprouts either, and I took a class at Hippocrates - the SPOUT experts. Go figure!

    Dear Beth,

    I am on board with you....I agree that we need to eat well, but we also need to get the therapeutic levels of certain things. 

     You mentioned amla and camu camu.  Are they good sources of c?  What do you think of Ester C?

    I am not an expert on Vitamin C - sorry I don't know much about Ester -C. I happen to be allergic to corn - and most sources of ascorbic acid come from corn, so I try to avoid those. I also like to try and find whole food supplements where possible, Amla and Camu Camu are excellent sources of Vitamin C and much more absorbable than asorbic acid Vitamin C supplements. It is hard to know about comparing the food sources to "lab" versions.  MY AMla says it is 20 times more absorbable  - so I take much lower mg than if taking ascorbic acid. I also use a RAW camu camu powder that I put in my smoothies.

    Country LIfe Real Food Organics made a Vitamin C that I really liked, but it has been impossible to find lately.

    I buy my Oncoplex from www.LIfeSciencePharmacy.com. They are the only ones I have found that discount the professional lines 20% . Their website does not reflect the discount prices - so it is best to call. If you order over $100 - you get FRee Shipping.

    There are other broccoli sprout extract products out there.A couple of months ago,  I did a price comparison and the Xymogen Oncoplex was the best value per mg of SGS. I also compared to my buying broccoli sprouts in the store(when I can find them) or  drinking the broccoli sprout tea and Oncoplex was still the most cost-effective method of getting the SGS.

    (Just to clarify Oncoplex is Xymogen's name for their SGS supplement)

     I used to take Designs for Health SGS version, which is similarly priced, but supposedly, Xymogen has the exclusive rights to the patented John Hopkins version (the one used for the studies) of broccoli sprout extract, so I made the switch. There are two versions - a 30mg and a new ES  version that is 100mg.

    Many thanks for your thoughts.  

    Like you, I did not do chemo or rads, but I have a more aggressive bc, triple negative. 

    I cannot relax enough to just go with only dietary changes; I feel that I need the added boost from stronger doses of sups.  

    I was buying SGS from my doctor then switched to a brand for convenience and savings.  Now I think I will switch to oncoplex.  I am also taking Avemar and Immpower but am thinking of cycling to a different immune booster called Mycoplex.  It is a good idea to change off some of these to get other pathways working too.  Have you heard of Mycoplex?

    I want to take brocolli pills but my onc tells me to just eat the broccoli.

    I've found that chopped in a salad with dressing reduces my broccoli fatigue.

    I'm sorry, but I  haven't  researched the mushroom supplements, as I am also allergic to mushrooms. :(.
