1st "abnormal" result
Hi all. My name is Robin. I am 52 years old. My mom was dx with BC at 36- had mastectomy and beat it which is amazing back in the 60s. No chemo, radiation, etc. She died in a car accident 19 years later. Go figure.
Because of her history, I have been having mammos since I am 29. In '04 I started having MRIs as well.
My last MRI was Jan. '10. All was ok. I went for my mammo and US yesterday. Mammo ok.
However, US showed: "hypoecholc lesion @ the 6'oclock position of the left breast measuring 8mm. It may represent a debris filled cyst or a small solid nodule. A six month follow-up ultrasound of the left breast is recommened.
BIRADS 3: Probably benign finding.
BRCA in '08 was negative
I have been seeing a breast surgeon for 3 years and I will see her next week with the films so she can review.
What is everyone's take on these results?
Thanks, in advance, Robin

A hypoechoic lesion refers to a spot that is darker than adjacent structures. It may be solid or cystic & may be benign or malignant. Typically further follow-up is recommended...The radiologist that wrote your report is recommending a 6 month follow-up. Your doctor may decide to follow that recommendation or may want to do a biopsy. Keep in my that a high percentage of biopsies are negative. Good Luck.

after I had a few small findings on my first 2 breast MRIs (which the radiologist deemed BIRADS 3 "probably benign" and recommended 6 month f/u), I was uncomfortable with the waiting and the uncertainty (I am high risk from LCIS and family history of ILC). I asked my oncologist for f/u--so they did a mammo the first time and an US the 2nd time, both of which were completely benign. My gyn told me BIRADS 3 is 98% benign, so that and the clear results gave me a lot of peace of mind.

I had one of those. It turned out to be a cyst and some "debris" got stuck on the wall of the cyst making it look like a solid spot. When the radiologist stuck the needle into it to biopsy it started floating away. He was all amazed saying "oh...look at that....". It was totally benign. Of course the next year I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells but that had NOTHING to do with this cyst.
Even before the biopsy the breast surgeon said it was 85% benign. You may want to ask your breast surgeon if she can biopsy it just to make sure. It is very easy to do. They just numb it up and using an ultrasound machine, do a needle biopsy.

Some arrogant Rad told me, "It's probably nothing...come back in 6 months." I had a BX and it was fibrocystic stuff, so all was okay, but the BX gave me POM. (NOW, 7 months later, I have a lump on the top of my breast/center nipple . The 2 lumps that were supposed to be BX'd were center below nipple. I found out that they nice rad couldn't get to one of them..wondering if this is it.)
