I'm 26 with an extensive family history of breast cancer. Nov 2009 had a lump come up in my left breast. It doubled in size by dec so I had an ultrasound it looked suspicious and a needle core biopsy that later revealed stromal fibrosis. but due to my family history we decided to take it a step further by me having a lumpectomy. I had it in jan 2010 and it revealed that the pathologist "thinks" its most likely a hamartoma. Well im worried. Are they the same thing? Why am having to come back and have ultrasounds done every 3 months? Why does it feel like there is still a lump in my breast after 5 months and why does it feel bigger than it did before??? Sorry with all the questions. i am just really scared that something might have been overlooked. I am having a follow up ultrasound next week and I feel scared all over again.

First off I am sorry someone so young has to deal with these issues. I can't help you with the diagnosis I am not familiar with your situation. I can tell you I had a breast MRI prior to surgery (initially a lumpectomy) an it probably saved my life. An MRI picks up stuff years before a mammo or ultrasound would. Although it picked up more areas of concern and changed my surgery, it did give me peace of mind that my left breast was crystal clear. Plus I only have to have one once a year, then eventually every other year. You get the films right away so there is no real wait time except to have your doc call you with his/her opinion. You should ask your doctor about getting one. Sometimes they have to fight the insurance company to cover it but it is worth it! Good luck to you and try to relax, I know its hard but you can't get yourself all worked up it may be nothing.
