Hi,

My name is Victoria and I am currently a high school senior who is in the process of graduating. Yesterday I came home on my lunch period to find out my mother has cancer. It was an emotional day for me, my sister and dad. I though I would find relief in my aunt, my mother's sister. She is a scientist who creates drugs for cancer patients. But all the doctors she had recommended refuse to take my mother's case on because she is a diabetic with kidney and heart problems. I am infuriated by this my mom needs help right a way! Who are they to deny some the right to conquer their cancer? Thats my mother I need her to  be my nuturer and friend; she needs be there when i graduate, get marry and have kids. Please I am begging anyone who knows a great doctor who will take a diabetic or specialist for diabetics with breast cancer please tell me!!!!

Hi Victoria, I am so sorry that you and your mom have to go through this.  This is a time in your life where you should be enjoying yourself and savoring your victory and it isn't fair to you or you mom to deal with this right now.  I have a 17 year old daughter and it breaks my heart that she has to spend even one minute worrying about me during this time of her life.  I am sure that you are primary in your mother's mind as she goes through this process.

I am not sure where you live but I would recommend you contact MD Anderson in Houston.  They are considered to be one of the pioneer cancer research facilities and they could possibly help.  Their phone number is (800) 392-1611.  The breast center is the Nelly B Conally (or something like that) so ask the main switchboard and they will transfer you.  I live in Vegas but have chosen to be treated there because I have been so impressed with them.

You may want to edit your post and let everybody know what state you live in because there may be a better option that somebody could recommend.  I know others will be along to help soon.

I am sure your mother is very proud of you for graduating and for reaching out on her behalf.  I wish you the best and let me know if I can provide another other information.

Post where your mom lives, I'm sure ladies from her area will be along to help out.  Also, you could contact the American Cancer Society (ACS).  Good luck.

Victoria ~ Depending on where you live, I'm sure if your Mother contacts any of the excellent major cancer centers on this list, will have experience treating patients with similar pre-existing health conditions, and will be able to help her:

    http://cancercenters.cancer.gov/cancer_centers/map-cancer-centers.html

If there isn't one within a few hours of your home, call the closest one and ask them if they can recommend both a breast cancer surgeon and an oncologist in your area.

I'm so sorry about your Mother's diagnosis, but I know there are wonderful doctors out there who will not be afraid to treat her, and I think it's great that you've already found BCO and are asking this important question for her!    Deanna

    Victoria,

The doctors at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston saved my life. I would recommend that your Mom contact a major cancer center for treatment.  They are not afraid to take on difficult or rare cases.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

If you live anywhere near Cleveland, Ohio  The Cleveland Clinic is rated tops in Oncology.  I can give you a few names if you would like. I have been going there since Feb. 2008 for breast cancer... I wish you and your family the best of luck...God Bless!

    Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late response i've really been busy with graduating high school/ taking care of my mother and family/ getting ready for college plus looking for a job, I know its not a great excuse but it's the truth. thank-you for all of you for responding and taking your time out of your day to help me, it means alot seriously. My mother is going to Sloan-Kettering in Manhattan. The doctors are wonderful and really helpful. My mother full diagnoses is stage 4 invasive inflammatory breast cancer that has spread to her whole breast and lymph node. They think they have found some small tumors in her lungs and liver. She is going for a biopsy this friday. Based on the outcome she will be starting treatment early August starting either with chemotherapy or hormone therapy. I know I may be repeating myself but thank you all so much, I was in a total state of shock and desperation when I posted the prior one. All of your responses mean so much that people who don't even know me care and want to help thank-you soooooo much. Anyone who is affected by breast cancer being themselves or a love one, if there is anything you need help or anything else pleased don't hesitate and message me. I really mean it. On a better note my sister and I are working on getting mammograms to get check, bring awareness, and help fund the Breast Cancer Research. I've also have been talking to my college about bringing more awareness to our campus and make a club on their campus. Thank-you all for listening and caring and wanting to help.

    Sincerely Thankful,

    Victoria Cooper

Hi, Victoria ~ Thank you so much for stopping back to update us on your Mother's situation.  I am so glad to hear that she's being treated at Sloan-Kettering.  I remember when one of my sisters-in-law had a very rare form of uterine cancer a few years ago.  The doctors in her hometown, which is a nice little city, had never seen a case exactly like hers, but the doctors at Sloan-Kettering had seen about 20 similar cases.  So you and your Mother should have great comfort in knowing that they will know exactly what to do for her situation.

You know, there are 2 recent posts here about dealing with breast cancer when you're diabetic.  One is called Dealing With Diabetes, and the other is Diabetes Concerns.  You can find them by searching for "diabetes" using the search feature to far right above.  I'm just thinking they might have some helpful information for your Mother, or you might be able to add something to them that you and she learn at MSK.

And I think what you and your sister are doing is awesome!  Please stay in touch with us about that, as well as your Mother's treatment and progress.  Thinking of you & praying that your Mother will do great with her treatment...  Deanna
