Post Mastectomy Pain Syndrome

Hi from England Ladies,

I'm posting this in several places so as many people as possible read it. I've been in constant pain since my failed recon in July 2008 to the point where I've been told by several Surgeons that ANY further surgery is out of the question for me. On Thursday I found this on the Internet

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7844435.stm

I certainly wasn't warned this could be a possibility. Was anybody else? Had I known then what I know now, I'd have chosen a different route, possibly increased surveillance and not surgery....

Trudie.

Yes, I've read this. No, I don't recall being warned in any detail, but was aware that neuropathic pain is always a possibility after most any surgery. Mine was invasive, not in situ, and the MRI was saying about 5 cm, so I didn't have as many options.I still have some neuropathic pain.

    Trudie,

I hope you receive this since you wrote in June  - I am new on this site. I had my surgeries in 2007 and have been in terrible pain. I was diagnosed with RSD. I have been to many doctors and I do not have my pain controlled. None will prescribe pain pills and I believe that is the only thing that works.

My question: Why won't the doctors do surgery?? Why would surgery not help? I am trying to talk my PS into removing my implants. I feel this is a logical solution.

Hope you are still out there!  Sofiajane

    Hi Sofiajane,

Yea, I'm still here and recently have had some success with controlling my pain by using Lyrica.  I had my implants removed after only 18 weeks in situ but sad to say even that didn't relieve the pain.  After 2 years and trying many other pain pills Lyrica seems to be the only thing that's effective.  I wouldn't say that I'm 100% pain free - don't think I ever will be -  but it's certainly a LOT easier.   I'd be interested in keeping up to date with you as I've had trouble even finding people willing to talk about the negative side effects of surgery for Breast Cancer.
