New England Slang
I was just reading the "Southern Slang" thread and it's so much fun! I love learning about the slang of other parts of the country. I thought it would add to the fun (and education) to start a thread for New England or Northern Slang!
Same as the Southern Slang thread--define the term and use it in a short sentence for illustration~
"wicked" = very, exceptionally She makes wicked good whoopie pies.
"gone by" = old, often aged beyond usefullness. "Those flowers have gone by, need to toss 'em out."
"cunnin'" = cute, adorable, used as a compliment. "Isn't her new baby just the most cunnin' little thing?"

-
"bubbler" = water fountain "If you're thirsty, there's a bubbler."
-
Grinder - a type of submarine sandwich. usual flavor is meatball. Goes great with a
Cabinet - RI slang for a milk shake, as in "Gimme a cawfee cabinet."
-
I never heard the "cabinet" one! That's great! And I love meatball grinders. . .
-
"So don't I" for "me, too!" WTH!!!!
"Frappe" instead of "milkshake" When we first moved to NH I ordered a chocolate milkshake for my daughter. She said, "It's all melted!" They put chocolate syrup in milk an shook it. And that's a milkshake here. New England has some quirky ways!
-
IN Massachusettes don't they call soda "tonic"? Seems like I remember that from my childhood days of visiting cousins in Mass. I thought it was weird at the time.
-
goes- used instead of saying "she said" ie- So then she goes, I hate gong to the mall, and I go, why?
teenagers talk like this all the time
-
Jimmies on your ice cream? ...Nanctucket
(sprinkles)
-
Jimmies in Maine, too! Plain and colored jimmies on your ice cream cone, a special treat!
-
pricker bushes.
-
OUCH! I run into them occasionally!
-
Now, this might not be limited to New England, but there is something I always equate with being from "The North"
What sits next to your apple pie on the plate?
no not ice cream, but....
a piece of chedder cheese
-
Apple pie and cheddar -- my Ontario Dad's favourite dessert!!!
And another "maybe just northern" dessert -- pumpkin pie with maple syrup. Anyone in New England tried that? Mmmmm good!
-
wow, sounds wonderful!!! I bet it's that REAL MAPLE SYRUP...there is no other.
so lindasa, are you going to Niagara on the Lake? I had the pleasure of seeing a Shakespear play during my senior year in high school, a great memory.
-
May DH makes a pumpkin maple walnut CHEESECAKE to die for!!!!
-
Hi Squid -- I actually live in Niagara-on-the-Lake --moved here 5 years ago. I think maybe you saw a GB Shaw play here -- our Shaw Festival runs from April to November.
Barbe -- that cheesecake sounds "mighty darn good" -- hey, is that a New England expression?
-
damn brain, where is the replica of Shakespear's theatre? We would take the bus from Rochester NY where I grew up.
-
Stratford!
-
Yes, that's it!!!
-
Is putting molasses on popcorn a New England thing, or just something my Dad's family did?
Maple syrup on pumpkin pie sounds yummy! I've baked acorn squash with maple syrup in it--also yummy!
-
Elastic = rubber band Would you get me an elastic from my desk?
I lived in RI (so I know what a cabinet is! ) for about a year when I was in high school. My teacher asked me to get her an elastic. I never forgot that as I'd never heard a rubber band called that (in Pittsburgh they call them gum bands I believe). I was a southern girl so I learned a lot of new words!)

Here in Ontario we call them elastic bands!!
I'm really curious about how a milkshake ever got to be called a cabinet. Anyone know the origin?
Here's a guestion for all you New Englanders: in the Canadian Maritimes, if you're a visitor or if you moved there from another province, the locals will introduce you by saying "Here's Linda, she's from away". Same in Maine?
-
Same in Maine. I know some folks who moved to Maine a couple decades ago and are still introduced as "from away." When we aren't being nice we call them "furriners" (foreigners, with an accent).
-
HI! Ham and bean suppers cracked us up when we moved here. Also, beans with breakfast?????? These are not the ways of a Jersey girl! The only way to have beans is with hot dogs. Period.
-
Beans and dogs, every Saturday! And beans for breakfast are good! So is cold pizza for that matter!
How ya doin' jteach??
