Mitrovalve prolapse..anyone?
I have been having heart palpitations lately. I always have had a problem with them.I went for an echocardiogram a month ago and they called me to say there may be a problem with the pumping valve. When I look that up on the internet, it all goes to the prolapse. Can this be an effect of radiation that I had on my left breast? I heard you can develop heart problems years later when radiated on the left breast. I have an appointment with the cardiologist on Thursday.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Hi, Candie ~ I think it can also be from a lack of estrogen, assuming you're modulating that with either Tamox or an A/I or something natural. And I'm sure you've ruled out too much caffeine and those sorts of common causes. Was the reason for your earlier palpitations ever definitively dx'd? Deanna

Candie-- Had you previously been diagnosed with MVP or is this a new condition? It's often very difficult for doctors to diagnose because the clicking or murmur sound isn't always audible by stethescope alone, so you may have had it for years and never have known-- that you've always had palpitations sounds like this may not be a new condition. I was diagnosed with MVP in my 20s, then in my 30s told I didn't have it, only to be told, after several fainting spells and an echocardiogram, that I do indeed have MVP. For surgeries, it's important to know, as you'll always need prophylactic antibiotics. It's usually a very minor condition but should be followed by a cardiologist-- I have annual echos. -- Julie

Thank you, Julie and Deanna for your responses. I went to the cariologist today and he says I need to have a stress test before I have my hip replacement surgery which is scheduled for June16th. He doesn't know if if is MVP or something else. The echo is not clear. It can be a false positive also. The last stress test I had was 3 years ago. I am waiting for the ok from my insurance company. Thanks again for your input, I will be in touch as this progresses.

That's good that he's on top of it, especially with pending surgery. Keep us posted! Deanna

I have a history of palpitations and irregular pulse that started after menopause. I have two mildly regurgitating valves. My mother was found to have severe valve damage in her mid seventies. She was a breast cancer survivor of over 34 yrears. At the time she had her radiation, the radiation was more diffuse and not as specifically targeted as it is today with newer technology. No one ever mentioned that it was due to the radiation although I believe it had some effect on her heart. Heart valve leaks/prolapse is fairly common in middle age women.Good luck at the Cardiologist's.appt.
Wishing you all the best, K
