City of Hope officials find blueberries fight cancer

Blueberries could be a powerful ally in the fight against a certain type of aggressive breast cancer, researchers at the City of Hope announced.

Research on animals showed that blueberry extract slowed tumor growth, reduced the spread of cancer to other parts of the body and killed triple-negative breast cancer cells - a type of cell that is difficult to treat, according to Shiuan Chen, director of City of Hope's division of tumor cell biology.

These types of cells account for approximately 15 percent of all breast cancers and generally carry a poorer prognosis.

Chen and his colleagues are currently planning a human clinical trial to test blueberries' effectiveness against cancer, in addition to research on the anticancer properties of other fruits and vegetables.
