Tumor markers?

Just had a 6month followup with my onc. My second round of scans came out clean. However in 3 months I will be doing bloodwork for tumor markers. She didn't discuss it with me and I don't know what it is about. I understand my cancer is aggressive, but what am I not understanding here?

Reg, Tumor markers are just used as a tool to help detect future cancers. Some onc. use them some don't. I have had them once. It is something that is just another tool to fight this stuff and not to worry abput it. I would also like to know the normal range for these markers? Dianne

My onc does the CA27.29 every 6 mo's. He explained that it could indicate if the cancer had begun to develop elsewhere in my body. To my mind, it's one more way to gain a little bit of reassurance (like a clear mammo) regarding recurrance. From what I have read, it isn't perfect but it could be an early indicator of distant cancer growth.
