Recontruction Surgery in Ottawa
Hi all
I'm in Ottawa, and I had a left mx in Dec 2009, no chemo, no rads. I had my first appt today with a plastic surgeon to discuss reconstruction. I've been so looking forward to today's appointment. I thought we would be discussing reconstruction options, but much to my surprise, implants were the only option discussed. The PS said she doesn't do autologous reconstruction nor do the other couple of PS in Ottawa, so implants are my only option unless I want to travel to another city. I was somewhat disappointed.
I'm still waiting for my BRCA results, but even if it's negative, I've been thinking that I want to have my right breast removed regardless, to lower my chances and have a better chance at symmetry. The PS said she would prefer to wait until I have the right mx, then return months later for reconstruction on both breasts, but if I insisted/preferred, she'd do the recon at the time of the right mx on both (which is what I want).
Any thoughts/advice??? Thanks in advance.

Hi
I am not sure if you already are aware of this by now as my reply is late but there are at least two plastic surgeons that do free tram reconstructions in ottawa - dr. guay and dr. rockwell. There may more now but as of three years ago when I had my free tram with dr. guay there were two. I had a good experience with dr. guay but it is hit and miss with him, he is very moody and can be rude to people at times but was great with me and did a great job.
Good luck with your reconstruction

Hi there
Thanks for the message. The Dr. I saw was Dr Rockwell and she told me that no one in Ottawa does any type of reconstruction work other than implants, and that she'd have to refer me out of town if I wanted to look into autologous surgery. So I assume if Dr Guay did the procedure for you, maybe he's no longer?? I find it hard to believe that in our nation's capital there isn't a Dr here that can/will do a free tram or other similar type surgery. I'm glad you were able to have the surgery and that you're happy with the results. Thanks again for the message.

Hi there
That's wierd that Dr. Rockwell made that statement. May be she stopped doing free tram's but I saw her free tram work on a patient a few years ago and she did a great job. I also saw Dr. Guay last week for follow up work as I had some complications with abdominal scar and he commented on the fact that he is still doing alot of free tram work. I think they don't do the DIEP tram flap in Ottawa which is where they take no muscle at all. If you really want the free tram, I would call dr. guay's office and just ask if he is doing free trams. It is definitely worth it, as it looks very natural.
