Does anyone know a good source to answer this question? Are there any side effects? Can one take too much?

    Dear ailenroc,

In the book, "Anticancer a new way of life" by David Servan-Schreiber, he recommends obtaining organic turmeric powder, (ground turmeric root), and mixing 1/4 teaspoon with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and a generous pinch of black pepper. Add this to soups, and salad dressings. Servan-Schreiber beat brain cancer twice.

I use it this way every day as does my daughter who was dx with TNBc. She puts it in her carrot juice. I just mix it in eggs or at the evening meal on my vegetables.

    From the book...

"To be assimilated by the body, turmeric must be mixed with black pepper (not simply with peppers). ideally, it must be also dissolved in oil (olive oil, canola oil, or linseed oil, preferably). In store bought curry mixes, turmeric represents only 20% of the total."

    Also...

"When researchers in Taiwan tried treating cancerous tumors with turmeric delivered in capsules, they discovered that it was poorly absorbed by the digestive system. In fact when it is not mixed with pepper-as it always has been in curry-turmeric does not pass the intestinal barrier. Pepper multiplies the body's absorption of turmeric by two thousand".

    Hi there ailenroc

As far as I know it is a safe herb, but at first it did give me the runs. I no longer have that problem. I buy organic ground turmeric powder, from the health food store. ($4 bucks, sooo cheap) In the evening, I take a heaped teaspoon, and drink it down with water, while having my salad, which has plenty of olive oil and black pepper in it. I've always enjoyed a Mediterranean diet, and I'm not at all fond of the taste of turmeric in my foods...so l try to down it as quickly as possible.

Anything that helps....DOWN THE HATCH!!! Yell

Taking turmeric powder will not really help much. Turmeric contains only around 3% curcumin. Also curcumin by itself is poorly absorbed. Curcuminoid an isomer of curcumin is the molecule that is actually beneficial. Needless to say if you are taking raw turmeric you need to take 100 grams to get 150 milligram equivalent of curcuminoid (the molecule that is actually effective when it comes to cancer - prevention and mitigation). Curcuminoid has no side effects if at all it has only positive side effects - it is proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, it lowers blood sugar levels naturally in diabetics, it detoxifies liver (particularly alcoholic fatty liver) and it is a potent anti inflammatory agent.

I spread about a 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of organic turmeric on two pieces of whole grain bread and spread with knife so that it goes into the bread.  On one side I put organic peanut butter or my current favorite Trader Joe's almond butter with roasted flaxseed.  On the other a skim of jam.  Then lots of freshly ground pepper on both sides and put them together for my sandwich.  I usually pair with a 500 mg capsule of curcumin (jarrow).  Try it.
