Just diagnosed and waiting for addtl tests

Hi - Went through treatment for Stage IIIb about 4 years ago.  Bilateral mastectomy, and had ovaries removed.  After treatment, I found a love of running. It got me outside and I could think through everything.  It is my therapy!!

This past October, I started to experience pain in my hip and groin area and thought it was a running injury.  Nursed it as a running injury and when it didn't get any better I went to the doc.  Found out I have mets in my left hip.  Waiting for additional scans to see if they are anywhere else.

Here is my ridiculous question.  Will I be able to run again?  It's the only thing that has kept me sane after treatment.  Those who have bone mets, are you able to be physically active?

Dear Angela, I don't have an answer for you, I am just thinking about you.

Someone with more experience will hopefully be along shortly.

angela - No such thing as a riduculous question. Yours is very valid. I think the size & location will probably determine whether or not you can run again. Sure, you can still be physically active. But some precautions might have to be taken. When I'm motivated, I'll exercise daily - but usually low impact. I would think that if/when you are not symptomatic, you should be able to continue with your normal routine. However, you may want to see an oncology orthopedic doctor or at least one that is familiar with bone mets. If the location of the met could be fractured due to a trauma or impact, you may want to consider another form of exercise.

Radiation really helps alleviate pain in bone mets. Most likely you will be prescribed zometa or another bisphosphonate that will encourage calcium growth and healing of the bone. And hopefully you'll be back to running.

I'm sincerely so sorry you are now a member of the club no one wants to join. I certainly hope your scans do not reveal any other mets. Best wishes and I hope all turns out favorably. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

    Angela,

I have bone mets and I continue to play tennis with no problems at all.  I do find that I need to stretch before or my neck and shoulders get sore but I think that is a result of my double mastectomy.  Hopefully, with a bone-strengthening drug and maybe rads you will have little to no problems with your hip.  I wish you the best of luck!

I have bone mets to the spine and right hip. My original breast cancer was DCIS in 1999- had a mastectomy and told I was cured. I was diagnosed in Jan. 2010 after many months thinking I had a sports injury.  I did have surgery to stabilize my hip after it cracked a bit.  I was in on a Monday and out on Wednesday so it wasn't too bad.  That was  January 25th.  I was a runner as well and my orthopedic surgeon assures me I will be back.  I am going to the Y now and using the eliptical.  I am on Femora and Zometa and I am getting better everyday.  I wish you the best

I am right there with you girlie.  So I hope you find these posts as encouring as I do.  I have a follow up appointment on Monday with my onc to assess more fully the bone scan wherby the report was available but not the images.  The report said that I had a pelvic tumor from what is likely a mets from my stage II IDC dx in 2006. I am trying to read up on what exercise I can do as what I am readng is there is a chance for fracture, so until I find out from my onc, I have been scared to do anything and I really would like to get a jump on my garden.  }-)
