As many of you know, I HATED the book, The Bridges of Madison County...I don't feel so bad not enjoying the book since the wonderful Joe Queenan trashed it too...and the movie...don't even start...

Now.....interestingly, I read this amazing book, Hitler's Philosophers...and then I started watching films about some of the people mentioned in the book...Sophie Scholl..Amazing film.  The special features following the film...extraordinary.......Hannah Arendt....unbelievable!  The films gave such texture to my understanding of the book.  Now I'm reading The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.  A page turner!  Could a movie be made based on the book?  Perhaps...which leads me to George Clooney's Monuments Men....It premieres this week and I shutter at the thought of how he ruins the story!  Watch the documentary, The Rape of Europa and call it a day...or read The Monuments Men!  There ARE terrific films based on great books...you just need to find them...just like a GREAT book!

I'm binge reading (lol) The Invention of Wings since it's due at the library in 2 days. Can't say enough nice things about the book.  Maybe the best part about it was I was reluctant to read it and was surprised how much I'm enjoying it. Next on my list is The Fault In Our Stars, it's a YA book. Anybody read it?

Haven't read "Fault..." But I enjoyed "Invention of Wings" a lot also. Just finished Anna Quindlen's new"still Life and Bread Crumbs'"  and now reading "we are Water" by Wally Lamb.

It's such a pleasure to come here and find women who are true book lovers. I love all the recommendations and have compiled a list of "must reads" that numbers over one hundred. When added to those books I own but haven't read yet, the number rises another fifty or sixty. I have one bookcase that is just for books I haven't read yet (but I continue to get more, saying, "Oh, I want to read that one...I'll read it next.")

I can't say enough about The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee. I know I've posted about it before, but now that I'm finished and have had time to let it "jell", I realize that it is one of those books that keeps coming back to you. During the day I will recall a particularly meaningful paragraph or phrase and wish, once again, that this guy was MY doctor.

Sandra- I just finished The Emperor of All Maladies and I agree with everything you said.  I loved how he summarized the book using the Egyptian Queen.  I learned so much from that book and I recommend it to everyone I talk to.

Just received from the library TWO copies of Still Life with Bread Crumbs....One was the large text version... gave it to my best, best friend to read!  She was sooooo delighted!  Going to start reading my copy before the day is done!

Just finished reading The Nazis and the Psychiatrist.  Very good book!

I read The Emperor of All Maladies several years ago and agree with the thumbs-up recs.

A friend just loaned me My Stroke of Insight, the library e-mailed that the new Lincoln Lawyer book The Gods of Guilt is waiting for me, and I still haven't finished The Universe Versus Alex Woods.  Decisions, decisions .....

I just finished reading War Brides by Helen Bryan and I enjoyed it immensely. I stayed awake until 4:00am this morning finishing it because I could not put it down.

I read Emperor of All Maladies while I was having chemo. My onc appreciated my reading material.

Swimmon2,  I loved reading The Fault in Our Stars. Eager to see the movie.

elizabeth1889 - I just finished fault in our stars, didn't realize it will be a movie. Was a quick read, really well done.  Sometimes I really like reading YA.  Eleanor & Park is another nice contemporary YA. 

Reconstruction Amelia is next, supposed to be suspenseful like Gone Girl however the reviews on Amazon aren't great so I'll read it with trepidation..

funny you say that about gone girl. I was thinking about books that EVERYONE loved but I hated. My version of that is Eat, Pray, love.  Am I the only hater of EPL?

Swimmom- I agree with you about EPL. I couldn't finish it. I couldn't watch the movie either.   But, I did enjoy Gone Girl.

I thought Gone Girl was kind of like a car wreck......horrible, but you can't help slowing down to look at it.

Agree - no to EPL.  Haven't read Gone Girl.

Reading an interesting book called First Mothers.  It's the stories of the mother's of the US Presidents, how they "formed" their sons - all with input from the Mothers, Presidents, wives, sibblings, etc - sometimes even presidential assistants.  The author started with FDR's mother since her reasoning is FDR is the first "modern" president who was subject to broad media coverage.  I'm looking forward to all the other Moms.

Has anyone read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the author of Seabiscuit?  It was recommended to me.

It is a true story of a man who survived a shipwreck and then overcame other odds during WW 11

I would like anyone's feedback before ordering it from the library.

I thought Unbroken was very good. I really liked First Mothers too.

Bedo:  There's been lots of positive feedback here about Unbroken.  I just haven't read it personally yet since I generally wait for paperbacks.  Hardcovers are too hard to hold during treatment w/the neuropathy.
