Breast Cancer conference in Spain. . .

one-third of breast cancers in women are avoidable.   Women need to exercise more and eat less.  I can't get my browser to allow me to cut and past anything for this forum so here is hoping that I have typed it correctly:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100325/ap_on_he_me/eu_med_avoiding_breast_cancer

Basically they seem to be saying there is a link between inactivity, being overweight and some types of breast cancer. And part of the way they are drawing the link is that rates for breast cancer are rising as weight seems to rise.  Note, by the way, that a glass of wine or so a day is NOT viewed as a problem.  A problem is the multiple glasses of wine every day.

While I don't exercise as much as I should [my exercise is more in the form of walking everywhere and trying to take stairs and the like] and I weigh more than I'd like, the weight gain is the last two years [about 15lbs which I understand from earlier articles this week is pretty typical with metabolism changes for middle aged women who don't take up marathoning] and I wouldn't say I'm obese by any definition.  We rarely eat dessert, never ever get fast food, have lots of veggies and don't eat alot of meat. Did I mention our food is about 90% organic, free range etc?  Contrast my mother who has been overweight much of her life, who smokes, eats ample amounts of fast food etc and who does not have stupidbreastcancer.

Has anyone else heard anything else or read more about this conference?

sigh.  Just sitting here hungry and likely to remain so.  Thanks Associated Press.

I read some of these things and have to HIT MYSELF OVER THE HEAD to remind myself I am always the exception to the rule.  Yes, it did say 1/3 of BC and diet...so I must be the other 2/3.

I was vegetarian for 20 years, when I switched to eating meat, it was rare and chicken/fish, I exercised 1 or 2 hours FIVE DAYs/WEEK.  My BMI was 19.  No cancer in my family...and whap.

I did (and still do) drink wine with dinner.....sigh.
