Do you think you can offset the bromide problem by taking iodine?  I am tempted to try it!  Tami

I am not yet taking iodine but am now interested in starting it.  I have an onc appointment on Monday but I don't think I'll get more than "well, nothing has been proven yet" comment.

Any suggestions on where to start?

pip, I would be seriously surprised if your onc knows much about iodine or would be supportive of taking amounts sufficient to detox bromine.

I've been subscribing to the iodine yahoo group for a couple of years now.  I've been supplementing with iodine for over a year now.  I took my 2nd iodine loading test and my first bromine test last month.  Even after all this time, I'm walking around with toxic levels of bromine.   I loved mt dew when I was a kid. I wonder if I'm still carrying some of it with me decades later.

The main thing to know about supplementing with iodine is to follow the 'protocol' which is a number of supplements to take with it -- vitamin C, selenium, magnesium.  Also, the bromine causes ill effects as it makes its way to the exit, and unrefined salt will help it along.

Here's a good website to start reading

A good place to purchase iodine in tablet form and learn even more about iodine is:

Thanks for the help Althea.  I will start my in depth reading about iodine.

I just came back from my onc visit and it went as you predicted, and as I suspected it would.  She is a great doc but has limitations when it comes to the benefits of supplements.  She just smiles when I tell her all the stuff I am taking.

pip, at least canada had the good sense to ban brominated flour products already.  If you join the iodine group, you'll see lots of emails.  It can be overwhelming, but most of the people posting have health challenges and they're finding their way back to health without, or often in spite of, the advice of medical doctors.  I had a doctor chastise me once for 'self diagnosing and self medicating'.  I had the AUDACITY to put a pinch of cardamom in my morning drink in the hope of easing nausea, and I drank, sharp intake of breath, green tea!  with ginseng!  Most doctors are clueless about supplements because that topic is absent from their education.

The information available to us is just so confusing.  We really have no choice except to take the bull by the horns and do our own research and decide what is best for us.  I can understand that mainstream docs can't possibly keep up with everything.

But I don't trust some of the nutritionists who are "self taught" or making a big buck from an uncontrolled market.  Yes, I am sure there are great ones out there, but it is not easy to figure out who and where they are.

Even studies that seem to clearly show evidence supporting the use of certain supplements are often questionable. The parameters from one study to the next are never the same.  And then there are the blanket statements like "Japanese women have less bc than north americans.  Japanese women eat more soy.  Therefore, a diet low in soy is responsible for bc."

I think I am just really frustrated right now.  I have been NED for three years now and this seems to amaze and please my onc.  I have changed a lot of things in my life that may or may not account for this success.  I just don't know.

    Geez...I think I just had a rant!
