    Roxy,

I smoked before BC. Not a lot....but I did. I quit when I was diagnosed. But after finishing treatment, I was so stressed out with anxiety that I would sneak ciggarettes from my husband. He STILL smokes. I allowed myself to one cigarette a day. I usually would light one up, take a couple of puffs and then but it out.

I was on Effexor, it didnt help. Ativan, made me feel strange...I ditched that.

Baseically....what made me quit for good now, its been over a year yeahhh, was guilt. Guilt! I had so much quilt about smoking. My onc would always comment how good I look, healthy. The nurses would say I have that glow. Whatever. My family, my 4 yr old.

I felt like the biggest loser for smoking after I just went through chemo and rads. I also read how smokers who have had radiation have a higher chance of developing lung cancer....and that scared me. Scared me bad. Lung Cancer? Well, being diagnosed with lung cancer your pretty much a goner. AND....80% of lung cancers are caused by smoking. Smoking has been linked to many cancers.

My dad has just been doagnosed with COPD. Hes 58, smoked since he was 15. He has been perscribed Chantix. I have heard it works good. Maybe ask your GP for a perscription.

    Hi Roxy

I used to smoke - I quit about 10 years ago.  It was really tough to do.

My SIL and BIL quit a few months ago.  They had the laser treatment.  Not sure where or what  part of the body they focused on (I'm thinking ears) and it really worked.  I know a few people who went this route and they are still smoke free.

It may be something you might want to look into.

    Good Luck!

Lexislove -  Love that link - going to send it to some friends - thanks.

Roxy42 - I quit 6 years ago when we decided to get pregnant.  I quit in places - one at a time until it was easy not to smoke there (like first in my car, then while at work, then while on the phone, etc.), until there was only one place I was still in the habit of smoking.  Then I went cold turkey.  The patio (my last place) was the hardest and I couldn't go out there for months without wanting a cigarette, especially if stressed.  Of course, by that time I was pregnant, so I just used a mental image of cupping my hands around my sweet baby's face and forcing him to breathe in the smoke I blew out.  So I guess it was ultimately guilt that did the trick for me, too.  Good luck!  It's such a hard thing to do but so worth it.

Oh, I should have clarified in my post  - "going to send it some friends who are trying to quit right now!"  I wasn't planning on ticking off any who have no desire to try right now.  ;)

Roxy, I too smoke. I quit before sx, then went back during chemo.  I have quit several times, one time was just over 6 years!  I have a million excues why I smoke.  But the reality is that I LOVE TO SMOKE.  I love my cigg in the morning with my coffee, I love my cigg while I am typing away, I love my cigg while walking, talking with friends, after nookie.  I just love to smoke, it is my 6th finger.

However I know what it is doing to me and my kids. I know that my kids are more likely to smoke, my oldest already does.

I need to quit also, but to be honest I am not ready.  I had set a date to quit and it passed and I really just didnt even care.  I did the patch, hypnosis, gum, cold turkey, chewed on straws and welbutrin to quit.  I know when I do deside to quit again I will go cold turkey.  To me it is just the frame of mind I need to get into.

I will tell myself I am a NON smoker and that will be it.  I am just not there yet.

I wish you the best!  I would suggest you just bite the bullet and DO IT!  You are a NON smoker!  Not that you are quitting.

Please let us know how you do.  We are behind you 100%

And a big congrats on 3 years!  WOOHOO

I tried to quit lots of times and was finally successful going cold turkey. Just a mind set that I was going to just do it. I know hard core smokers who had success with wellbutrin (if you are on Tamox you should not use it). When I was diagnosed I just wanted to start again, because I did enjoy it and generally smoked less than a pack a day...I think the thing that keeps me from starting again is the thought of all the potential extra complications I will bring to my situation.

I quit with each pregnancy though...the guilt factor helped there. I smoked for about 25 years...
