    Hello Everyone,

My mom died this past June from breast cancer that spread all around her body for 8 years and then after it got to her brain a second time there was nothing anyone could do...she was 56...too young if you ask me.  I am 21 and I can't stand it. I want to do something...now.  So I'm going to start a non-profit. Now, I don't know all of the details of how to do that...but I figure one first step is figuring out where the money I would potentially make go.  I know about the major companies..Komen, Avon...but is that really the best thing to raise money for? Would working on policy changes be a better way to spend money? Research?...if research, then what company do you go through. I don't want all of this money that means so much to me to be spent on stupid logistics. ANY WAY. If any one had any insight on this or a website they know of or a book or ANYTHING to help me figure it out, that would be amazing...I live in St. Louis, MO if that makes any difference on information people have. Thanks! Peace.

Della you could Google How to Start a Non-Profit Company.....maybe that would help...I think the first thing you need is to contact some type of attorney or CPA who handles non-profits.....ZGood luck and I am so sorry you lost your mom...Mine was 52 when she passed form bc.......

Della -- I really admire your eagerness and commitment to do something which honours your Mom.  But I have to tell you that starting up a non-profit or a charity is extremely complicated -- and costs money!

I'm going to make a suggestion:  Do lots of research on organizations which raise funds for, and awareness of, breast cancer.  Choose one of these organizations and approach a branch in your area.  Set up an appt with the Executive Director, to discuss ways in which you can achieve your goal.  It could be anything from establishing an annual event, such as a dinner, or a run, which uses your Mom's name (e.g., The First Annual Jane Doe Memorial ______) -- to offering to speak to teenage girls about breast health, or producing a pamphlet to be distributed in high school health classes.

There are SO, so many ways you can make a difference, but first, you need to talk to those who are already in the non-profit area and who know the charitable world inside-out.

    Wishing you well.

    Linda
