My first business trip since treatment ended
hey all--
I'm on my first business trip after ending radiation almost exactly a month ago (at the sundance film festival) -- I used to travel ALL the time so its been a big change to stay home! I know its irrational but I am angry at myself that my stamina isn't better. I SO want to be able to do things I used to do. I was supposed to go to a very special event tonight and I just couldn't do it--so I am in my hotel room. I know I have to take it a step at a time but I just don't really know this new me yet.

Listen to your body is all I can say. If you don't feel up to something yet, don't stress yourself. I finished rads early September and I still get tired days. I guess it takes time.
Congrats on going back to work though, your job sounds fun!

be kind to yourself, and it gets better.
take care,

returning to work...business as usual...is really hard. i remember returning to work after 8 months off.....i was exhausted. what really helped me was to just go slow...one event at a time...and pace myself. your stamina will return but maybe not as fast as you would like. it isn;t just the physical treatment but also the emotional and psychological changes we go through during treatment and recovery. it does get better as hattie says.
remember, you have been in a "war"...killing cancer...and healing from all of it. you will feel better...but pace yourself.
hang in

Christine - remember to look at what you can do - your first trip since treatment ended should be celebration enough! That is a great achievement. Take your time, you'll get back up to speed before you know it!
So, any juicy celebrity stories...??
-
Christine - Just pace yourself. Don't worry about the special event that you were going to attend - going on a business trip one month past radiation treatment is an event all in its own! Listen to your body and rest.

It takes time to get your energy levels back. There will always be another trip with a special event that you'll go to when you're body is ready. It's better to listen to your body now than feel really worn down and not be able to get through the next day.

Christine - One month after radiation is a short time. Be easy on yourself. I have been told it takes 6 months plus to get our energy back after rads. That doesn't take into account any other surgeries, chemo etc....
You are on the trip. Pat yourself on the back.

If you had chemo, it can take up to a year!
I figured when I finished rads (mid-Aug) I was at about 5% of me. I think now I'm up to about 50% so there is improvement.
Be good to yourself. Cut yourself some slack.

I found that I "crashed" about two weeks after my rads treatments ended (beg. Nov)...felt "sluggish" for over a month after that......was not seeing ,much improvement at one point, so I bailed, and went on a trip south (Nicaragua) for Xmas---that one week by the sea, with lot's of rest and a bit of sunshine, did wonders for me---
I'm only planning on going back to work in mid-Feb (and only part-time)---I think it will be a few months before I can handle the regular 9-5 M-F----don't be so hard on yourself----your body is probably still rebuilding, and will do so for at least another 6 months
take care

I was once told that how ever long you went through Tx is how long it takes to heal....but I think it is actually longer....

I took a trip the week after radiation and I was wiped. I just got back from a trip to Miami - almost 1 year after radiation and everyone but me kept wanting to nap - I was full throttle the whole time. It comes back - be kind to yourself!
