Student from the Netherlands looking for an interview

Options

Dear all,

My name is Tamara and I’m a senior college student from the Netherlands majoring in anthropology, with a focus on gender studies. The field of anthropology that sparks my interest the most is medical anthropology, and for my final thesis I have decided to write about the topic of breast cancer. My mom herself was diagnosed with breast cancer last year; she had an operation and went through chemotherapy and radiation.

My thesis, which is due this May, will be divided into a literature search and what they call “field work”, in which I conduct my own interviews, either face to face or via the Internet. I thought it would be a good starting point to look at what you women have to say within these forums, and I would be extremely grateful if you could help me in answering some of my questions.

The central issue of my thesis will deal with the matter of sexuality, but not “sexuality” in terms of your sex lives, but “sexuality” in terms of how women who are diagnosed with breast cancer feel about their womanhood, for example how you deal/have dealt with hair loss, the role of “the breast” according to you, the issue of breast loss and possible reconstruction, or the relationship you have/had with your doctors or nurses, amongst other questions that have to do with the relation between breast cancer and how you feel as women.

For those who would like to contact me personally, please do not hesitate to send me a private message so we can talk one on one and discuss the interview in further detail.

I would truly appreciate if you could take some time in helping me out, and if you wish to keep your anonymity I am completely fine with it.

I really hope to hear from you! It would make me veeery happy!

I feel your post is really intrusive--this site is for women WITH cancer and their caregivers.

I feel Tamara stated clearly in her post title what the post was all about....so maybe by not reading this kind of post one would not feel intruded. Furthermore it seems to me that Tamara also would qualify as a caregiver, having had to deal with her mother's illness last year. I am a survivor myself that went through the full treatment line including double mastectomy without reconstruction and I don't wear breastforms. So the topic of her thesis really hits home with me During my treatment I was interviewed about my care at the hospital etc. by a local newspaper that was covering the breast nurse program of the hospital I was treated at. Everyone deals differently with their illness, I always was very open about it and would feel ok about taking part in an interview, if I have the time to spare.
