I'm new to this forum....I just found out today that my father has breast cancer. He's 49 and was recently laid off so he has no insurance....his doctors are saying that hey believe if they remove the tissue,he'll be ok but I'm so scared. Is there any places I can contact to see if tey have medical assistance for those without insurance or find mor einfo on breast cancer in men? Thank you

Hello, and I'm so sorry your dad has breast cancer!

There's a forum in here for men with breast cancer, but I'm not sure how active it is. Unfortunately for your dad, it's rarer in men, so many of the resources target women.

If your area has a comprehensive breast cancer center, or regular cancer center, that would be the best folks to talk with about financial aid. They usually have financial counselers who can help you figure out what you qualify for. For instance, when I was treated I was in Spokane, WA, and the cancer center I went to had just about everyone in one building. I'm now in Maryland, so haven't figured out the local support here.

They were able to discount treatments that they did, as well as talk with me about other things I might qualify for. I was lucky. I'd signed up for medical insurance a year previously. But the co-pays were still so bad that my mom is still helping me with my finances until I get back on my feet.

I'm 52, and just finished treatments in september. Please give your dad hugs and best wishes from me, and if he needs to talk with someone, there are many lovely people on here who are more than willing to try to help.

    Take care!

PLEASE!! If your father was ever stationed at Camp LeJeune, check out tftptf.com
Men stationed there are at a much higher risk for BC from the water supply at the base.

    Hi,

I am sorry about your dad, my husband was diagnosed 1 year ago. What state/country does your dad live in? We are in MN and there is a good amount of help available here. Its a tough time, and every thing seems to move fast. Take care.

Hello thoughtbubble, I'm sending love and light your way and your father's. It's so overwhelming that in addition caring for your father and helping him to get through treatments, you have to worry about how to pay for your care. I know it was extremely stressful for my family - I went through treatments for Hodgkin's Disease, and then my father went through treatments for colon cancer, and navigating insurance, co-pays and coverage was awful for all of us. I did a recent post on managing the costs of treatments that may be helpful for you - http://blog.cincovidas.com/managing-the-costs-of-treatment. Love, strength and survival, Britta
