Vitamin D vs D3

Options

A friend of mine, just brought me from NY, 3 bottles of vitamin D 5000 IU. I had order to him (he's traveling a log), vitamin D3 but maybe he is misunderstood. I read the ingredients and the label says : "supplement facts: Vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol), amount per serving 5000 IU. I'm wondering, what is the difference between D and D3? Is it ok my mom to have 5000 IU of this capsule of D? The brand is "Pure essence labs" in case someone knows it.

In Greece I can't find D3 5000 IU. There is only 1000 IU, so if you want to have daily 5000 IU you must have 5 capsules.

Vitamin D3 is what you want for your mother. Your friend got you the right D. You don't want D2...it is synthetic. The D3 is natural and will help boost your mother's D level. Make sure she is having her levels checked before giving her 5000 IU daily.

    Li, thanks for your response.

Her levels of vitamin D3 is 37. If I understand you right, D3 is including in D? So it is OK to have this D capsule? Because I thought that D3 is a kind of D, (as it is D2) and I thought also that the main label of the packaging has to write D3.

Levels of vitamin D checking should be 25-OH and NOT 1-25-OH as the latter doesn't tell much.

Vitamin D2 or D3 in supplement will work equally.  D2 may need a bit more intake, but both work equally well to up the serum level.
