IBC in reconstructed breast????

Options

Hi,

I had a TUG flap reconstruction last spring after a TRAM failure.  I had a skin-sparing mastecomy prior to that. Two days ago a rash appeared on the reconstructed breast and it is also swollen to the point that my new nipple is flattened. I also noticed the pitting appearance on the bottom partof the breast that I have read is a IBC symptom.  The plastic surgeon has put me on Kefex to see if that clears it up.  Does anybody have any thoughts on this?  Thanks!

    Hi Pamelaiza,

How long will you be on the antibiotic for??   I know your ps is waiting to see if this is simply an infection which it may well be after your recon.

However, if the Kefex does'nt clear it I'd make an appt to see your breast surgeon/specialist rather than the ps to rule out anything more serious.

I really hope it's just a benign infection but do insist on more testing if need be, as another triple pos our type of cancer was so aggressive it makes sense not to leave anything to chance.

    Good luck:)

Maybe if you also post this on the IBC forum here some of the ladies there can advise you more.

    Hi Tricia,

They have me on the Keflex for 7 days.  I will take your advice and see my surgeon if it doesn't clear up. I'll also post on the IBC forum.  Thanks for your reply!

I am having something similar. It matched the description for IBC (red, sore etc) and for pagent's itchy, nipple sore and swollen) My BS looked and said most likely an infection so am taking 10 days of Keflex. She is very good and has seen both types of cancers  in her practice. Will have a biopsy next week if no change. She said that breast infections are pretty common. Still scary, good luck and hoping for the best!
