Kim don't panic they are much better than TE's...just not as squishy as I was expecting...but I think it is still early days and I'm hoping that squishy is in all our futures :)

Debbie I somehow missed your quote the first time around...thanks for reprinting it Kat....it's brilliant !

Now for our implants...Kat I have 600cc Mentor mid profile plus....same size but different projection.. even so it sounds like we are finding the same feelings from our boobage.  I was only overfilled to 620ccs. I'm still going to to be optimistic for now...hoping for squishies :)

    best to all,

Just a quick note, have work to do, but hi all, wishing you all well.  Raining here today...  I have to gut my disustingly messy bedroom today.  My son is going to get his marriage license today and I can't find his birth certificate.  When my DH and I got married 8 years ago, my son was 13 and my DH adopted him... so he needed a new birth certificate.  Well, I have his old one, with his old last name, but not his new one or his adoption papers!  I am freaking out and feeling like the worlds worst mom!!!  I know that I had them, I ordered 2 copies just to make sure, but I can't find them anywhere.  So, that's why I will be tearing my house up today, looking for them!

A note on the yippee squishies.  Mine are squishy and soft and I do a little jiggle when I'm not wearing a good bra.  Mine are Mentor Medium Profile Plus 450 ccs... but I was expanded to 650 ccs, so maybe that is the difference.  I don't feel any pressure in my lungs or chest at all.  I still have a little pain here and there mostly when laying on my side, but it isn't anything horrible, just uncomfortable (there's that word!).  But they are squishy!  My PS had said that he wants me to wait 6 months before we put a larger one in, so that might be your answer...  6 months?

Have a great day ladies, I'll be here freaking out, and it's raining...

Ok I got a couple of new bras....they have underwires :(  and I've had one on alllllllll dayyyyyyyy! It's actually a pretty comfortable bra...but it is just so much more bra than I have ever worn.  I feel I bit huge in it =\  The one is a Hanro.....and the other is more substantial but a similar cut. I am a 38C or a 40B depending on the bra.  I don't have lots of projection but the width of my breasts seems to demand a larger cup than I have had in the past (pre BC).

    Here are some links:

Hope eveyone is doing ok...finding healing and comfort....

    I hear crickets....I swear I do ;)

    Good morning Jan ladies!

I haven't been on in a couple of days.  I have had a little bit of family drama which is really insane.  My dad passed away 1 and 1/2 years ago totally unexpectedly and my mom who is only 57 has started talking to a very nice man in  the last couple of weeks and my baby sister who is 11 years younger than me is freaking out!  Oh the drama!  I have been on the phone for hours with them and my brother for the last few days.  I am emotionally drained by her.  Then on top of that I have really been quite uncomfortable.  My neck and shoulders and armpits and boobs all hurting!  It may be from the stupid nipple shields my PS wants me to wear for 2 weeks.  I can't stand to go without a bra and wearing one with these seems to cause all kinds of issues with the way it fits and the way I hold my body.  I didn't sleep for 3 nights straight.  After working 12 hours on Wed. I came home ate supper, took an Ambien, Valium and Motrin, took the shields off and slept straight thru the night!  Feel much better after that!  I hope once I get the stitches out and don't have to wear these crazy things I will start feeling a little more normal again.  I will say it seems like getting the nipples done made my breasts look smaller.  I think the way they pull the skin to form them tightens everything up.  If I would have known that I might would have opted for the 3d tattoos but who knows after everything settles again I may not feel that way.

Oh well enough about me.  I am off until Monday.  Going to have a great weekend!

bc when your day comes for bra shopping there is sure no lack of bra mavens to help ;)

Becky sorry you have had so much family drama swirling around you....exhausting I'm sure =( Healing from your nipple surgery sounds really uncomfortable...geez!  Glad your were able to finally sleep....that was quite a sleep cocktail ;)  Hope your healing speeds up and you feel better soon..

I have developed a tight, immovable cough...I slept on the couch the last two nights so DH could get some rest....no need for us both to deal with a loud hacking cough all night :(  An uncomfortable side effect of a bad cough seems to be that my chest muscles which are now outside of my boobs keeps contracting when I cough and after a few days...it hurts :(  I went to see my gp today and she fixed me up with a few medications to open my airways and let stuff move....she said my airways are reactive and tight....so I should be better soon :)  She gave me zithromax to nip any secondary bronchial infection in the bud :)

Something I learned about antibiotics recently is that Zithromax does not give you yeast infections!  Yea!  So if it's appropriate, it's a good one.  I was given Bactrim after my exchange and got a yeast infection that took weeks to get rid of....I guess this can vary from person to person but all I know is I want to steer clear of Bactrim :)

Kat....are you ok......haven't heard from you in a few days......

Hope everyone is doing well, healing and finding comfort,

    Hi all and Happy Friday.

I'm here...I'm hormonal I think.  The big zit on my chin was my first clue!  lol  I wonder about the efficacy of the tamoxifen because I'm not having side effects....No hot flashes, no mood swings or bone pain....not that I want that, but I would like to have a sign that it's doing its job.

Laura...I did not know that about the Z-packs...good to know though.  My PS ordered me zithromax a few days post op from my exchange because I had some crackles (fluid) in my right upper lobe...I think I either aspirated or I didn't get all my anesthesia up...but I had a low grade temp too which I never get so it was concerning.  I made his PA order me a diflucan to have on stand-by just in case I would get the dreaded itch....so now I have one (just in case!:) I hope you're back to feeling like new again and both you and your DH gets some rest!

Becky, I'm real sorry about your dad...I lost mine very suddenly 18 years ago and my mother was only 51 at the time and was devastated.  She grieved for years and years and has just now recently gotten re-married to a lovely man (10 years older than her!) and they have a very happy life.  It must be very hard for your little sister but I bet she comes around soon especially when she sees that your mom is finding happiness and companionship.  I hope you were able to diffuse the drama and everyone is reminded of what's important in life!

Interesting what you are saying about the nipples.  I'm thinking that this will give my body image issues some closure.  I'm at the part of our breast cancer program where I'm really struggling with body image and keeping self pity at bay.  I keep thinking if I can just get the nipples on I'll feel better....if I look down and I see them sticking out it will feel more like breasts.  I not anxious about going through the recovery and shielding of them but I am in a hurry to close this chapter.  Is there a good thread out there on nipples?

Hope everyone is doing well....Cathy, how are you feeling?

bc...good luck with the bra shopping.  I'm taking an anti-bra stand (that's why I'm hiding out in here instead of over at EC...HA! :)  Don't tell anyone you've seen me.   lol

    Have a good evening everyone!

Oh Becky!  The nipple thing sounds awful.  I'm sure that's why you weren't able to sleep (nice sleep coctail, by the way.)  I hope you get out of the shields soon.

Chemo #6 was yesterday, and I'm doing ok.  Tired, heartburn, and the beginning of some mouth sores...but that's it so far.  I usually really start feeling like crap tomorrow.  Knock on wood, right?  Maybe I'll get lucky this time.

It's supposed to be 112 degrees by Sunday, and one of my AC units isn't working well right now.  Only a 5 year old unit, but I've had it worked on almost every year.  Thank God for home warranties!

11:33pm and my husband hasn't even left work yet...ugh.  He's been working 16 hour days, and my 15 year old leaves for camp for 4 weeks tomorrow.  That leaves the 10 year old and I to fend for ourselves.  At least she likes soup and Mac-N-Cheese a lot!

Kat, I won't tell!  LOL!!!  You're too funny!  I totally agree that the nips make them seem more real...  I'm now a little anxious for the tattoss, because now that my nips are all healed up and are the same color as the rest of my skin, now I feel like they need a little something, but that is going to wait until I decide what I'm doing for sure as far as the implants.

Becky, I don't know what kind of shields your PS has on you but they sound awful...  How much longer do you have to go?  I know that my PS used a somewhat thick piece of foam (soft foam) about a 1 or 1 1/2 inch square and then cut a hole in the middle for the nipple to stick through, the foam was about the same thickness  as the nipple was long.  He had me wear those for 2 weeks and I always put a nursing pad over them to camoflauge them more inside my sports bra.  If you're are that uncomfortable, maybe you could try this method.  Or he also told me that I could buy the corn pads and put them on around my nipples, but I liked the foam.  You might also try buying a bigger sports bra to wear for now.  There is a nice one at JC Penney that zips up the front so you dont' have to wiggle into it.  And I'll tell you this too, not that I am recommending that you do it, or advising you to do it, just telling you what I did....  I stopped wearing my pads after about a week and half...  Just went with the bra all alone.  My nipples are fine, they have shrunk, but that's what I wanted, I didn't want the headlights on all the time, but they are still there.  Anyway, just thought I'd share...

Kim, I hope you're doing okay in that heat!  That can't be good with you going through chemo!  Sorry that you're having to fend for yourself...

    Have a great weekend ladies!

Paula, The shields I have are really hard plastic that basically is like having a dome over the nipple and absolutely nothing can touch them. I have cheated two nights and just used a nursing pad to get some comfort.  I guess I am just afraid that if I do that too much I will smash them in and then my PS will have a fit when I go back Thur.  Then again I don't really know why I care what he thinks.  I pay him right? Mine are way bigger than I want too and they tell me they will shrink to 1/3 the size.  They better or I am gonna be ticked off!  I do hope my boobs "fluff" back out because I was happier with size before.  I will say I do think it kinda completes the look a little and is kinda nice to see something in the middle.  I always thought before they sorta reminded me of a face with no eyes.

Kat, You are funny hiding in here girl!  But hey that's ok cause you know us Jan girls won't rat you out.  We love you bra or no bra!  Believe it our not I really feel more comfortable in a bra as far as my boobs go but have any of you had problems with some of your bras especially the sports type rubbing under your arm right where your pec muscle attaches.   I do sometimes and it is so sensitive it feels like a raw wound.

Kim, Hope this chemo is easy on you and you don't have many side effects!

    Happy weekend everyone!

Kim, I hope your feeling ok and no side effects kick in...

I'm still coughing and coughing and coughing ;(  I hope this gets better soon...I hate being exhausted by a silly cough after all that this body has been through...annoying :)

Going to go have another cup of lemon, honey and ginger tea :)

Hope everyone has a nice weekend....

    Hi Ladies

Laura what kind of bra do you have that is lacy and stretchy?  I hate wearing bras and so for haven't put one on yet, but I'm sure at some point will have to and I love lacy things.

Becky, don't you love family drama?  Hopefully your sister will come around and realize that it is a good thing your mom has found someone special.  Everyone deserves happiness. Hope your nipple recovery goes quickly for you. The hard plastic things sure don't sound very comfortable! I think I like the sounds of the kind Paula was using, at least they sound more comfortable.

Kim how many more rounds of chemo do you have to have?  Round #6 right now and in that heat, that must be so difficult. Try to stay cool and comfortable.

Kat you are too funny and it is always so interesting to hear what you are going to have to say. Your secret is safe with us! As far as the tamoxifen goes, did you ever have the test done to see if your body metabolizes tamoxifen?  I had read about it on here, so I had asked my surgeon if I could have the test done, thinking that he may prescribe tamoxifen.  I believe he just sent my bloodwork to mayo clinic, and they did find I would metabolize it. However, with additional bloodwork that was done, they found that I am post menopausal, which I was a little suprised by, since I am only 47. So he has prescribed me to be on armidex.  I haven't started yet though, because I figured I should give my poor old body a chance to recovery from surgery first.

As it is, my abdominal incision is being very challenging, and taking a long time to heal. I am becoming a little frustrated with the homecare nurses that have been coming to change the dressing.  She keeps telling me that it is healing perfectly, but I have my doubts.  I have decided I will go back to Toronto on June 11 and have the surgeon that performed the surgery take a look to make sure everything is ok.  She did tell me, that because I had three C-sections there was alot of scar tissue, and that it would turn black, blister than sluff off.  So I am just hoping this is what she meant.  I am so afraid of it getting infected. The surgeon also told me the best thing for it is to let soap and water get at it and the homecare nurses are telling me to leave dressing on the longer the better, even if there is drainage there?  Who do you believe?

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Take Care

    Cathy

Hey Laura...yay to the bra...boo to the cough!

If you're not bringing anything up, then you should get yourself some codeine to supress that cough!  You can do more damage with a hacking cough...but if it's productive, of course, you want to bring that crap up.   Hope you feel better soon!

We went to a wedding last night and it was very nice.  Paula, I thought about you and your son's wedding coming up!  You remind me of Sandi, my good friend and the mother of the bride last night!  This was not the black tie event...that one is in 2 weeks and my DH is still grumbling about it.  Seriously, who does black tie weddings anymore?  By the time you buy a formal gown, a tuxedo, spend 250 on the room at the Sofitel, travel to and from Chicago AND the gift, it might be better to just send the new couple a check for 300 bucks and not go and still save money.   I'm secretly looking forward to it but I would never let on!  hehehe

Kim, sorry you're suffering this weekend...prayers to you.  Also, hope your air is working ok.  I always keep Cave Creek on my daily weather page and I see where it's going to be 105 today.  egads that's hot.  We're a calm after the storm.  Last night a bunch of tornados touched down in Central Illinois.  Praise the Lord it bypassed us.  There is a small town called Streator about 40 miles from us that they're saying is leveled.  How horrible for those folks.  It seems with all this global warming and the damage we're doing to our planet just makes for more and more natural disaasters.  Scary stuff.

Off to hide under the covers....seriously, I feel a nap coming on.
    Have a good day everyone!

Cathy, the bra I have settled into is at the following link.  There are a few ratings by women who have had bc :) Seems they like the comfort too.  One of the very nice thing about this bra is it keeps my boobage out of my armpits and the band that goes around my side and back is wide enough that there is little to no back fat =p I am somewhere between of full B to small C and I feel like the girls have plenty of support :)

Cathy, abdominal healing can be really painful....I had a total hysterectomy a few years ago (the old fashioned kind) and it really really HURT!!!!  Hope you feel more comfortable soon :)

Kat, glad you and DH enjoyed the wedding and as far as the over the top wedding in a 2 weeks...enjoy it and buy something pretty to wear ;)

My GP gave me a cough suppressant and prednisone...today I am finally beginning to feel better, my airways are beginning to open and my coughing spasms are much less. I was coughing so hard it hurt where my stitches cross the front of the breast ;(  I bet by tomorrow I'll be much better :)

DH is our mowing the lawn...racing with incoming thunderstorms...Smudge and I have been on our walk and are being bums in the air conditioning =)

Enjoy your Sunday....find some comfort, rest and healing,

Hey Cathy, we must have been posting at the same time!

Are you allowed to get in the shower?  As an old home health nurse, I used to tell my wound care patients to take a shower and really get it cleaned good with soap water and a hand held shower head.  Just cover it loosely with gauze until your nurse comes.  If she is having to 'pack' it at all, you may have more issues.  Does she 'wick' the corner of a gauze and then push it in any points of your incision?  Are they doing like a 'wet to dry' which would make the gauze stick to the wound when it dries so that all the slough will come off when they pull the gauze off? (that's a good thing)  It probably would be a good idea to see your doctor next week....I hope you get some positive reinforcement that things are going well.

Eat foods high in protein for wound healing!  (Just had a steak myself  yum!:)  Eggs and peanuts too!  And if your MD says it's ok, I took Vit C three times a day when I was newly post op BMX and thought my incisions healed up great.

On the Tamoxifen, I am an extensive metabolizer and I am also 47 so I'm glad I'm taking it vs the arimidex.  I see the onc again in August so I'll compile a list of questions for her then.

    Have a great evening everyone!

I just started taking Arimidex last week.  If you have questions about it, there is a great Arimidex thread here.   I just realized it was 6 months ago today that I had my bilateral masectomies.   I am glad that it is 6 months later.  No reconstruction, but I can sure feel the area is still healing.

For those of you that are having heat waves, it was 63 degrees today in the great northwest.   Come on up...for those of you that are having bad storms in your area, I am glad that you are safe!

    Hello my January sisters,

Today is my 5 month "cancer-versary".  I decided to use my mx date since it is when the known tumor was finally gone!  Having 3 surgeries since August has been exhausting but now we'll make it 4 on Friday with exchange surgery.  Hopefully that will be my last, at least for this.

    Happy Monday.

    One & all.

I'm always so thrilled when we hear from one of our team that has been missing for a while. It lightens my heart to see a post from one of our own.

I continue to ride the waves of excrutiating pain that periodically receeds enough for me to function. Apparently hauling my gear in & out of the school on Fri -- with four hours of singing and dancing was "too much." Saturday I spent in agony...... which then sent me back down the rabbit hole of mental-misery. Gosh, they are so entangled.

In any case, it's closer & closer to my 'second opinion' appointment...... only nine more days!!!!

Any of you that are the praying type, I welcome all prayers about this appointment. For my mental and emotional strength to meet this new doctor and for her insight into my story. For anyone not on the praying channel feel free to send up some encouraging thoughts from your own tradition. I welcome all the support I can muster.

Two steps forward & one backward.

My laptop just crashed completely & I'm on DH's.

Didn't mean for this to sound quite this dismal. I just got THE most amazing piece of paper in the world in my mailbox. I have begun to take photos and will blog on about it endlessly at some point.

Long story short: MI K teacher saw me last Dec. & purchased my book for use in her ELL (English Language Learners room..... none of her two dozen kiddos spoke a word of English at the beginning of the year.)

One of the girls in her room drew a picture of a butterfly and then used the words of my book to describe why she would choose to have a pet butterfly.

It brings me to tears just attempting to tell you about it. It makes me realize what a legacy each of us has...... each in our own ways. This teacher had the insight to know just how much this little child's work would mean to me. The teacher first told me about it on a FB post.

Seeing the page with my own eyes is soooooooo empowering. So humbling. I'll let you know when I get it together enough to share so that you can see what on earth I'm talking about.

    xx00xx00xx00xx

    Strength and courage.

Hanging in there after chemo on Thursday...2 more to go, 2 more to go...finally there's an end in sight!  This heat is gonna kill me with my hot flashes, though.  Unbelievably hot.  Got my one AC unit fixed, now it just needs time to cool down that side of the house.  Think I'll hang out in my bedroom for now.

I'm glad lots of people are still here, sharing information and insight.  It's really helpful, even if I'm a ways away from using any of it.

    Have a great afternoon!

I'm with Leah -- the weather in Seattle has been the pitts!  We had gorgeous weather on Saturday and then, just in time for the Race for the Cure on Sunday, it rained.  So we had a soggy, pink-filled Sunday.  I carried the 0-1 year banner for the survivor march and didn't cry until we got to the end and a band sang "I Will Survive."  Then we were all bawling.  I'll try to post a picture when I get a chance.

Especially if you're the one to carry the banner.

    Big props.

I'm proud of all of our chemo gals making progress toward their own finsh lines.

Big gentle hugs to all in need.

    Morning everyone...

Donna...congrats on getting closer to the end!  If you need help choosing the implant style and size, pop in on Exchange City....those gals are a wealth of knowledge!

Debbie, how exciting that your book is in the school system...Your famous!  Whohoo! :)

Stay cool Kim in AZ....and stay dry in Washington Brenda!  We certainly are having tumultuous weather here too.

Question for Becky...since you had your BMX a couple days after me...how long did you wait for your nipples after your exchange?  Some MD's are waiting months and others are getting right on it if they didn't do it at the same time.  Just wondering.  Hope you are healing well too!

    Everyone have a great day!

I had a great appointment with my ps yesterday. It was my 6 week follow-up after my exchange. He wants to talk about nips in the next 6 week appt. I'm in no hurry....don't want to deal with nips until it's fall clothing season ;) He only does nips in the OR if there are implants involved...he wants a sterile field. He says TE's are briefly exposed during nip recon (yikes), and infection can complicate the whole TE, so and he takes no chances....hmmmmm.... He says if I need any fat grafting we will also review that in time. :) I was glad to know it's an option if I need it.

    Morning all,

I had a good 6 wk. follow-up yesterday.  It has been 6 weeks since my exchange :)  He is happy with my healing and the general shape and of my new boobage :)

He wants to see me in another six weeks to discuss the nipple surgery
at that point. He says he only does nipple reconstruction in the operating
room when implants are involved.....he said there is a short span of time when
the implant is exposed and he wants to only be in a sterile area when that work
    is done.

I also asked about the right breast having less fat under the skin....much more hollow
looking....than the left breast. He said that is because the bs scrapped much closer
to the skin on that side. If after 6 months there is still a marked hollow area he will
    consider doing fat grafting.

So all in all I felt good about the visit :) I forgot to ask him why my implants still feel
so firm and if my implants are completely under the muscle or not.....ah well...next
    time.

I haven't read anyones posts in days....been busy with my watercolors and gardening!
My ps also took me off restriction!!!! Yipeee :)

Hope this finds everyone doing well.....with all they face....

    Strength and healing,
    Laura
