stage IV concerned for my daughter
Hello ladies from a stage IV survivor. Although I fight with bc I concern myself survivor because some years before stage IV would be a death sentence. I would like to ask about the tests for a woman with heredity. Doc told my daughter she has to do breast ultrasound and test pap every six months (she is 30 yo) until she could have mammos. She is also planning to get pregnant and is concerned about the mutations she can pass to child. Her husband's mothrer has lost her life from bc in early age and doc said the mutations if any could pass only from mother to daughter and not to son. This is better than having both ways probability.
Does anyone here know if the tests that doc proposed is standard for 30 yo ladies?

BRCA genes can be passed along from either parent to children of either gender. So a father can pass a BRCA gene mutation on to his son as well as his daughter. Breast cancer is much more uncommon in males than in females, of course. A BRCA mutation often carries a higher risk of ovarian cancer. The BRCA genes can also pass along a lower tendency for other, non-gynecological cancers. Most (not all) BRCA-related breast cancers occur before menopause.
The person most qualified to evaluate your daughter about a possible hereditary breast cancer gene would be a genetics counselor, usually found at major institutions.
Overall, only about 10-20% of breast cancers are thought to be due to a gene mutation, the most common being BRCA. About 70% of breast cancers are thought to be from unknown/non-obvious risk factors (besides being a woman), at least in the United States.

I haven't had the BRCA test (insurance wouldn't pay for it),but my gut feeling is I'm negative for those, but have some other less potent genetic suseptibility to breast cancer that came from my dad's side. Paternal Gma had bilateral bc age 70 or so, dad's first cousin had bc at age 47, her daughter at age 50, then me at age 35. So that stuff about it can only come from the mother's side is just not true, there is no bc on my mom's side at all.

My grandmother, mother,my first cousin and I all had(have) breast cancer. I tested BRCA- but my cousin was positive. I have a two year old daughter. My breast surgeon said, based upon current guidelines she would recommend MRI starting at age 25 for my daughter. Of course by the time she is 25 I hope they have some type of preventaive measures. From what I am reading they are getting closer to that.
I would say your daughter would fall into the early MRI category.
Good luck!

How very sad & un-acceptable to know some medical professionals continue to provide WRONG information regarding hereditary cancers to their patients. I would suggest your daughter consider finding another doctor who is knowledgeable and more qualified. Why pap smears every 6 months too? Your daughter & son-in-law both may benefit highly from genetic counseling/testing since they are truly the most up-to-date professionals for proper guidance. Are you and/or your daughter BRCA positive?! If so, she should be having annual breast MRI as well. Best wishes!!

Thank you for the intresting information! My daughter would benefit a lot from a genetic counselor. Any info about these things would be precious before getting pregnant
. About the cancer potencies I find till today any knowledge is at an early stage that could not give us a way to protect our families. Even if one has a mutation gene (I haven't done BRCA tests) docs don't propose not having children or having checked insemination. I have only heard a couple in England that has done in vitro fertilized insemination after a lot of goverment objections.Does anyone here know anything about this couple? It was in this years news I remember.
